The Emerald Ball Goes Green

Saturday, February 25 · Club Level of UNT’s Apogee Stadium

The annual Emerald Ball supports the Emerald Eagle Scholars, UNT's award-winning program that helps high-achieving but financially challenged students achieve their college dreams. Since the first ball in 2006, more than $400,000 has been raised for the program's endowment. The Emerald Eagle Scholars program provides students with financial and academic support and campus connections to help them succeed in college and earn their degrees. It has helped more than 2,400 students — most of whom are first-generation college students — attend UNT.

The theme for this year's ball reflects the importance of sustainability at UNT. In teaching, research and daily practice, the goal of finding solutions to meet the needs of the present while not compromising resources for future generations is woven into the fabric of the university. For example, UNT scientists are creating bioproducts using properties found in plants and other UNT researchers have established the world's first environmental philosophy, science and policy field station at the southern tip of Chile, building on UNT's strength in sub-Antarctic biocultural conservation and environmental science.

In planning for this year's sixth ball, event organizers are using eco-friendly practices without sacrificing style. This green tie event will feature recycled and reusable materials from linens to glassware to decorations and the menu will consist of local seasonal food. The venue for this year's Emerald Ball is Apogee Stadium, the nation's first newly constructed LEED Platinum-certified college football stadium. Outside the stadium, three wind turbines feed the electrical grid that provides power for the stadium and other buildings in the Mean Green athletic village.

The 2012 Emerald Ball starts at 6 p.m. and includes cocktails, dinner and dancing. Tickets are $200 each, with proceeds supporting the Emerald Eagle Scholars program. Sponsorship opportunities also are available.

For reservations, more information, or special accommodations, call Abbie Lows at 940-565-4851 or send email to specialevents@unt.edu.

Derek Villarreal, Emerald Eagle Scholar, Class of 2015

“It is a blessing to be a part of the Emerald Eagle Scholars community, where its members inspire each other, every day. Most of my fellow scholars are first generation college students and this program is the reason they are here. With this program, we have an opportunity to make our world a better place.”
