Between Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, and Christmas Day, Dec. 25, the American Red Cross has provided the following services across the Greater NY Region of New York City, Long Island, the Lower Hudson Valley, and Greenwich, Conn.:

  • Served 48,488 meals and snacks to residents
  • Distributed 338 bulk cleaning supplies, toiletries and additional materials
  • Contacted 316 people through in-person outreach to assess their needs including counseling and referrals to organizations and agencies including FEMA

Red Cross Responds to Storm Damage Across Mississippi

JACKSON, MS, Wednesday, December 26, 2012—The American Red Cross is responding to damage reported in 10 Mississippi counties following severe weather last night.

Red Cross is working with the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) and local Emergency Managers in the following counties: Lamar, Forrest, Stone, Pearl River, Wilkinson, Lawrence, Hinds, Jones, Clarke and Lauderdale. Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) members are on the ground in the affected areas assisting with lodging, food, clothing, health services and emotional support for anyone with immediate, disaster-caused needs.

As people return home today to begin the clean-up, Red Cross has several safety steps that should be followed.

Alabama Red Cross Responding to Severe Weather

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., December 26, 2012 — The American Red Cross Alabama Region is currently responding to assist residents affected by last night’s tornadoes and severe weather around the state of Alabama. The Red Cross is working with area emergency management agencies to determine where help may be needed. Initial reports indicate there is damage in the following counties: Butler, Pike, Lowndes, Autauga, Clarke, Escambia, Marengo, Tuscaloosa, Choctaw, Mobile, Crenshaw, Sumter, and Washington.

Over the holiday, more than 140 trained Red Cross volunteers were on standby to respond to the threat of severe weather that was unfortunately realized. Today, Red Cross volunteers are going to affected areas to assess the damage and determine the needs of those affected. Other Red Cross volunteers will be canvassing affected neighborhoods to hand out water, clean up kits, and other disaster relief items.

A Red Cross shelter is open at the City of Prichard (near Mobile, AL) Public Safety Building located at 743 Mt. Sinai Avenue, Prichard, AL 36612. This shelter is open for anyone displaced by yesterday’s severe weather.


Disaster Alert: Severe Weather in Mississippi

Mississippi – Severe weather with strong winds damaged homes and left residents without power in several counties on Tuesday. Multiple injuries reported. The Governor declared a State of Emergency.

The East Central, Capital River and South Mississippi Chapters communicated with county Emergency Management Agencies, staffed the Emergency Operations Center and provided assistance to disaster victims as needed.

Alabama – Several tornadoes touched down in multiple counties throughout the state due to severe storms that destroyed and damaged homes on Tuesday.

The Alabama Gulf Coast Chapter deployed team members, opened a shelter for disaster victims and placed additional resources on stand-by.


Disaster Alert: Tornado/Winter Storm in Texas

Disaster Alert

Texas – Severe storms throughout the state caused tornadoes that damaged homes and left thousands of residents without power on Tuesday.

A winter storm brought heavy snowfall that made travel conditions dangerous and caused power outages in Bowie County on Tuesday.

The Greater Houston Chapter deployed team members and opened a shelter for affected-area residents.

The Heart of Texas Area Chapter placed material and human resources on stand-by.

The Texarkana Area Chapter communicated with local emergency management and placed shelters on stand-by


Disaster Alert: Winter Storm in California

Disaster Alert

California – A winter storm caused the closure of an interstate and stranded travelers in Mono County on Saturday.

The Greater Los Angeles chapter deployed team members and collaborated with another organization to open a shelter for the stranded travelers.
