Sustainable Water Infrastructure Research

As a whole, water systems in the United States have done an excellent job of protecting human health. However, increasingly, the Nation is having difficulty operating, maintaining and renewing its water infrastructure—the pipes and facilities that treat our water and move it from place to place.

Water infrastructure research at EPA:

• Develops predictive modeling tools for new infrastructure technologies
• Creates decision support tools that include economic and public health considerations while comparing water infrastructure approaches
• Explores innovative techniques to increase water treatment efficiency
• Ensures public health protection from distribution and storage system contaminants
• Determines innovative approaches to monitor and mitigate aging infrastructure
• Improves designs, reliability, and understanding of green infrastructure effectiveness under region-specific conditions
