Thomas Fairchild, PhD

Dr. Thomas J. Fairchild is the Vice President for the Office of Strategy and Measurement. He had previously held a faculty position at the Center for Studies in Aging at the University of North Texas.

Dr. Fairchild received his B.S. in management and his M.A. in sociology from Wayne State University. He completed his Ph.D. in sociology with a specialization in aging from Wayne State University.

Dr. Fairchild has cross academic appointments as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine in the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, as well as an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Management and Policy in the School of Public Health.

He has been involved for more than 31 years in the field of gerontology and health services management. His primary interests are quality improvement, leadership, organizational culture, and strategic management. He has also done extensive work related to developing and implemented educational programs for faculty and staff related to leadership and strategic planning as well as trained staff associates in both the senior housing and retail sectors. He has worked with a variety of national and international companies in the development of retirement housing and services for older adults. His research has been sponsored by grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Administration of Aging, and various other foundations and organizations.   He has membership in and serves on the boards of numerous associations including Assisted Living Federation of America, American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, and Gerontology Society of America.

As Vice President for the Office of Strategy and Measurement he is responsible for leading institutional performance through ongoing process improvement and quality enhancement activities. He leads all strategic planning and performance measures efforts and has responsibility for reaffirmation efforts for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Dr. Fairchild is the Co-PI for the Texas Alzheimer’s Research Consortium (TARC) at UNTHSC. TARC is a state funded collaboration between five of the state’s leading medical research institutions to improve early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Fairchild received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging and is a fellow in the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education.
