The USPTO is pleased to announce the addition of two new features to the Trademark Electronic Search System (“TESS”).

First, the new Image List feature allows the user to display the mark drawings for the search hits. Drawing images are displayed in three columns. After completing a search, use the “Image List” button at the top of the page to view search results using this new feature. By selecting a drawing via a mouse click, the user can also toggle to the document display for that the selected mark. Returning to the Current List from the document display returns the user to the last used view of the search hit list, the text view or the images view. Information is available in the TESS Help File under the topic Record List Display.

Second, multiple searches can now be submitted at a single time using the Free Form search screen. Multiple searches can be conducted by merely separating each search with a semicolon (;). For example, the three searches HELLO[BI,TI]; WORLD[BI,TI]; S1 AND S2; could be submitted as a first search of a session. All three searches will be performed, and an intermediate Multiple Searches screen appears with the results of each search. The user may then select which search results to review. Information is available in the TESS Help File under the topic Multiple Searches.

WARNING: Searching by TC code will only retrieve registrations coded from August 28, 2007 through January 31, 2011. The USPTO continues to code all pending applications that contain a design element using a numerical design code system modeled after the International Classification of the Figurative Elements of Marks. Searches performed using these codes in the Design Search Code [DC] field retrieves pending applications and active registrations for marks that include the design element(s) searched.

Filings Information:

Last complete paper filing date: 26 February, loaded 28 February.

Last complete electronic filing date (TEAS): 21 February, loaded 28 February.

These dates should be used as guides and do not imply that all Trademark applications carrying these filing dates are available in the system as of the load dates. Updates are scheduled to occur Monday through Saturday prior to 5:30 AM.

Milestones:

On October 28, 2003, TESS was updated in preparation for the implementation of the Madrid Protocol at the USPTO.  New International Registration and Standard Character fields were added, filing bases were reorganized into the Original Basis and Current Basis fields, and indexing procedures were updated to allow for improved searching for diacritical mark characters and other unusual symbols.

On September 28, 2000, the New User search screen was added to TESS to help those unfamiliar with TESS searching syntax obtain more meaningful search results.

On August 9, 2000, the attorney of record information was added to TESS as a search and display field. Correspondence address information is available on TARR. Use the Check Status button on your TESS document view screen to automatically retrieve the TARR record for that document.

On February 14, 2000, TESS was introduced.

Please check the System Status page for status of USPTO systems and the Emergencies - Alerts page for notifications related to security issues and emergencies.

Important Notices Concerning TESS: TESS is intended for use by the general public. Due to limitations of equipment and bandwidth, TESS is not intended to be a source for bulk downloads of USPTO data. Bulk data may be purchased from USPTO at cost (see the USPTO Products and Services Catalog). Individuals, companies, IP addresses, or blocks of IP addresses who, in effect, deny service to the general public by generating unusually high numbers of daily TESS accesses (searches, pages, or hits), whether generated manually or in an automated fashion, may be denied access to these servers without notice.
