Campus-Based and Institutional Loans

Institutional loans are loans in which The University of North Texas Health Science Center is the lender. All institutional loans must be within the students’ Cost of Attendance. Loans are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis depending upon student need and available funding.  

 

Government Funded

 

Federal Perkins Loan APPLICATIONS ARE NO LONGER BEING ACCEPTED FOR 12/13

·        Must be enrolled at least half-time

·        Must have exceptional need

·        Must have exhausted all Stafford loan eligibility for the year

·        Maximum eligibility is $8,000/year ($60,000 lifetime limit)

·        5% fixed interest rate

·        No origination fee

·        10 year repayment beginning 9 months after student graduates or drops below half-time

If eligible, you will need to complete Perkins Entrance Counseling at mappingyourfuture.org/oslc/counseling/index.cfm

 

Primary Care Loan    

·        For medical students intending to practice in Primary Care

·        Must have need (as determined by student, spousal and parental information)

·        1st, 2nd and 3rd year DO students are eligible for awards of $10,000. 4th year DO students are eligible for awards of $20,000.

·        5% fixed interest rate if in compliance with promise to practice Primary Care

·        No origination fee

·        10 year repayment beginning 12 months after student graduates or drops below half-time

·        Interest does not begin to accrue until 12 month grace period has ended

To apply, please complete the UNTHSC Application for Primary Care Loan and submit the form with required documents to the Financial Aid Office.  The Financial Aid Office will determine eligibility based on student and parental need as determined by the required documents. 

 

Loan for Disadvantaged Students Applications are not being accepted at this time.

·        For medical students from a disadvantaged background

·        Must have need (as determined by student, spousal and parental information)

·        1st, 2nd and 3rd year DO students are eligible for awards of $10,000. 4th year DO students are eligible for awards of $20,000.

·        5% fixed interest rate

·        10 year repayment beginning 12 months after student graduates or drops below half-time

Non-Government Funded

 

Etta Newby Loan

·        Must be a Texas native and a Texas resident

·        Must be enrolled full-time

·        Must have need and have exhausted federal loan funds

·        Maximum eligibility is $4,000/year (lifetime limit is $8,000)

·        0% fixed interest rate

·        No origination fee

·        Repayment begins 12 months after student ceases to be enrolled full-time

·        Student will agree to repay $30 per month for every $1,000 borrowed until the principal has been paid
