DNA lab helps hunt serial killer
UNTHSC’s Center for Human Identification made national news this week due to its help with a possible serial killer case in Houston. The bodies of seven prostitutes have been found, and parts of the found remains have been sent to the Center for help in cracking the case. The story was picked up by 42 news outlets nationwide, including MSNBC.com, the Boston Herald, and KDFW, the Dallas-Fort Worth Fox TV outlet. Please note, though, the misidentification of us – we’re referred to as North Texas State University.

WINK
WINK TV in Ft. Meyers, Fla., ran a multi-part series about eight skeletons found there, which included several minutes of footage from the DNA Lab. The skeletons were found without identifying information on or near them and they are all young males. Police are still seeking information for this case.

DREAMy research
The Star-Telegram also featured the DREAMS project on Nov. 12, detailing research involved in the project. Dr. Ximena Urrutia-Rojas helped explain the project’s goal of teaching Hispanics how to discourage obesity and related diseases in their families through the use of promotores, or community workers.
