First Friday Update by President Scott Ransom

ICBD Debut

George Pepper, Dr. Bill Jordan, Dr. J.K. Vishwanatha and Dr. Scott Ransom

As you probably have heard, UNTHSC has officially formalized a long-term relationship with The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD) that establishes the Institute for Cancer and Blood Disorders (ICBD).  The vision of the Institute is to be recognized as the authority in all aspects of discovery, prevention and treatment of cancer.  This collaboration between two of the area’s leaders in medicine will benefit patients who are dealing with cancer as we combine our expertise in cancer care and research together.  Our mission is to conquer cancer through excellence in research, prevention, patient care, education and service to rural and other citizens of North Texas and beyond. This new research institute undoubtedly will be the model for others to follow.

In addition, the Center becomes the clinical oncology division of the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine.  CCBD will add to our existing clinical education for UNTHSC, including didactic classroom education for medical, graduate and physician assistant students, as well as on-site training for students and residents within the clinical setting.  By combining our current research programs, we can provide leading-edge, basic, scientific, clinical and translational cancer research, along with the finest patient care services.  We will continue to attract and recruit clinicians, researchers and public health professionals from many different specialties and collaborate with others around the state, country and world with the goal of finding real cures for cancer through research and treatment.

I am committed to the success of this great undertaking and eagerly anticipate the huge impact that this team effort will make in curing and treating cancer and blood disorders throughout North Texas. UNTHSC end logo
