HSC's "Possibilities" celebrated at inaugural events
It’s official… On Oct. 19, Dr. Scott Ransom was inaugurated as the Health Science Center’s fifth president. The week of “World of Possibilities” events celebrating the inauguration – which included a talk on Alzheimer’s disease, the inaugural ceremony, an all-campus celebration, the DO Dash, and the black-tie gala – was a great success.

How would the world of science and research be affected if Health Science Center instructors could pipe their knowledge and experience into every classroom of every school district in the state and show young students the exciting and interesting world of science?

Last month, the departments of Cell Biology and Genetics and Biomedical Communications combined their knowledge and talents to bring science into Fort Worth ISD classrooms and classrooms across the state via distance learning.

ACOS honors TCOM faculty and alumni
Although TCOM is known for producing top-notch primary care physicians and faculty, our surgeons are getting national recognition, too. The American College of Osteopathic Surgeons honored some of our faculty and alumni at their Annual Clinical Assembly of Osteopathic Specialists in San Francisco on Oct. 19. Dr. Don Peska, associate dean for educational programs for TCOM and associate professor of surgery, received the 2007 Distinguished Osteopathic Surgeon Award for his outstanding accomplishments as a surgeon, educator and researcher. Dr. Al Yurvati, TCOM Class of 1986, chair of surgery and member of the ACOS Board of Governors, and Dr. Dale H. Brancel, TCOM Class of 1980, were given Presidential Citations by the ACOS for making “significant contributions in the development and use of standards for the certification of surgeons.” Dr. Daniel R. Gilbert, TCOM Class of 1994, was named a fellow of the ACOS for advancing osteopathic medicine and surgery.

Remember to vote!
Tuesday, Nov. 6, is Election Day. This year, 16 state constitutional amendments are on the ballot in Texas, including one that could have a big impact on the Health Science Center. Proposition 15 is the constitutional amendment that would create the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas and authorize up to $3 billion in bonds for cancer research. For information about all 16 propositions and this year’s election, check out the Texas Secretary of State’s web site.

Health Science Center supports “Pink Out”
game at TCU
Tomorrow’s TCU football game may look a little different. Instead of a crowd of purple… you’ll see a crowd of pink. TCU fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game to support breast cancer awareness.

Look for the UNT Health/Health Science Center booth in Frog Alley before and during tomorrow’s game against the University of New Mexico at Amon G. Carter Stadium at TCU. And, listen for interviews with our folks before the game on 103.3 FM ESPN radio.

QCARE training concludes, winners announced
Wrapping up the first round of customer satisfaction training through the QCARE initiative left some UNT Health employees quite satisfied themselves.

Throughout the course of the cruise-themed program, employees could earn points to qualify for various levels of prize drawings. A reception to honor the success of the program and to draw winners’ names was held on Friday, Oct. 5, in the Atrium. The big winner was Mary Palacios, Clinic Services Rep III, Family Medicine, who won a cruise for two to the Caribbean, leaving from Galveston.
