Welcome, new GSBS and SPH students
Another group of new students have started the next step in their educational careers at the Health Science Center. Students entering the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and School of Public Health got to know the campus last week with orientation activities. Both schools started classes on August 13.
Here are some quick stats on our new students.
You’re invited to help welcome Dean Kurz
The campus community is invited to meet Dr. Richard Kurz, new dean of the School of Public Health, at a reception on Wednesday, Aug. 22, from 4:30 to 6 pm in the Atrium of the Education and Administration Building. Dr. Kurz will officially join the Health Science Center on Sept. 4.

HSC faculty, alumni to receive AOF awards
Members of the Health Science Center family will bring home top awards from the American Osteopathic Foundation Honors Dinner at next month’s American Osteopathic Association annual convention in San Diego. Dr. Mark Sanders, a 1998 TCOM graduate and assistant professor of family and community medicine, will receive the Wyeth Emerging Leader Award. Dr. John Licciardone, professor of manipulative medicine and director of clinical research at the Osteopathic Research Center, will receive the Gutensohn-Denslow Research Award. Dr. Christine Estrada, a graduate of the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine who earned her master of public health degree here and is currently a palliative medicine fellow in our Department of Family and Community Medicine, will receive the Merck Outstanding Resident of the Year Award. Earlier this year, the AOF presented Dr. Bruce Dubin, associate dean for academic affairs and associate professor of internal medicine, its Educator of the Year award.

Reminder: Join President Ransom for lunch on Aug. 29
What’s a family gathering without a cookout? To help celebrate our first annual Employee Appreciation Day, President Scott Ransom and his grill team will be dishing up burgers on Alumni Plaza Wednesday, Aug. 29, starting at 11 am. To help manage the crowd, just like at the annual holiday lunch, employees are asked to plan their attendance according to this department lunch schedule – if possible. If you can’t come at your department’s assigned time, please come when you can. Other accommodations will be made to provide meals to those employees who work at night or at off-campus sites. Pssst… Look for surprise gifts on Employee Appreciation Day, too!

Grant will boost women’s health research
A research project that explores new ways that hormones affect the brain, led by Dr. Meharvan Singh, associate professor of pharmacology and neuroscience, was funded through the National Institute on Aging (NIA), a division of the National Institutes of Health. This four-year, $5.6 million grant is the third Program Project Grant (PPG) for the Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience, placing the Health Science Center among the few institutions in the nation to have been awarded three such grants within a single department. The grant also puts the department in the nation’s top 10 percent for research grant dollars per faculty member, and the top 20 percent for total research grant dollars of all research centers.

DNA Lab broadcasts services on TV, Web
The UNT Center for Human Identification will be featured on an upcoming episode of the long-running FOX TV show, America’s Most Wanted. Last week, a crew from the show interviewed Dr. Art Eisenberg, director of the DNA Identity Lab and Stephen Gammon, missing persons database administrator, and shot footage of the labs and forensic analysts at work. The episode will focus on the lab’s involvement in two specific cases and will highlight the need for family reference samples in missing persons cases. The episode is scheduled to air on November 3. The Lab also recently launched a new Web site that will provide the public and law enforcement agencies information and easy access to its DNA services. Check out the site at: unthumanid.org.

UNT Health update: New places, new faces
The UNT Health at Hulen Internal Medicine and Family Medicine Clinic has opened, and Dr. Susan Conroy, a 1999 TCOM graduate and new assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, is the attending physician. The clinic, at 4925 S. Hulen, was previously managed by Plaza Medical Center, which had contracted with UNTHSC faculty physicians to provide coverage for the busy primary care practice. Plaza Medical Center residents also train there.
UNT Health is also proud to announce the addition of Dr. R. Larry Marshall, a rheumatologist, to its faculty physician roster. Dr. Marshall joins the Department of Internal Medicine as an associate professor and will see patients at the Patient Care Center. Dr. Marshall is board certified in internal medicine, with a subspecialty in rheumatology, and is a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology.

Merit bonus forms due by Sept. 14
As part of the Health Science Center’s Strategy Map goal to recognize and reward top performers, President Scott Ransom approved a merit bonus program for FY 2008. The deadline is right around the corner for supervisors to recommend a one-time merit bonus for those non-faculty employees whose job performance and productivity consistently exceed normal expectations. Friday, Sept. 14, is also the deadline for the required performance evaluations that document an employee’s eligibility for the bonus award. A new link on the Human Resource Services page of the intranet includes detailed merit program guidelines, timelines and the merit bonus recommendation form. Bonus checks will be distributed in early November.
