The UNT Health Science Center will host the second Reynolds Annual Geriatric Update on September 18 in the Medical Education and Training building.

This year's conference, "Them Old Bones: Preventing Falls, Managing Fractures and Maintaining Mobility in Older Patients," will address gait and sensory changes that make older adults more vulnerable to falls, the common causes of falls and how to manage fractures that result from falls. Physicians and nurses in attendance may receive 7.5 hours of continuing medical education credit.

Jennifer Heffernan, MD, assistant professor of Internal Medicine, will be the keynote speaker. Heffernan has provided geriatric assessments for consultations to the Gerontologic Assessment Program (GAP) Clinic at the Health Science Center. Her main focus is long-term care, and she is an attending physician at several nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, and continuous care retirement communities in Tarrant County. She is actively involved in teaching osteopathic medical students during their mandatory geriatrics rotation and recently completed a fellowship to pursue research in health disparities. Heffernan is Board Certified in family medicine, geriatrics, and hospice & palliative care medicine and is a Certified Medical Director.

The one-day conference will begin with registration at 7 a.m. Supporters of the conference include the Health Science Center, Reynolds GET-IT, Area Agency on Aging, Healthy Aging Council and the Tarrant County Academy of Medical Ethics Consortium.
