MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT TAKES TOP HONORS AT NATIONAL CONVENTION

missionbutton.jpg UNT Health Science Center’s Marketing and Communications Department won five awards in the Excellence in Communications Awards for 2005 presented by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine.

The health science center tied with Midwestern University of Osteopathic Medicine for most awards won, but health science center staffers took more first place wins than Midwestern, with four projects taking first place.

There were 64 entries in all, a record number of competitors, according to Cathy Kearns, vice president for communications and member services with AACOM.

“The quality of the entries this year was great,” Kearns said. “This year, there was an impressive, consistent quality of excellence in the entries that were submitted, which made it very difficult to select the winners in some categories.”

Winners from the health science center were:
-1st Place, Best Media Relations Piece, Research!America;
-1st Place, Best Community Service Program, Hispanic Wellness Service Project;
-1st Place, Best Newspaper or Newsletter, Campus Connection (April 2004 edition);
-1st Place, Best Newsletter (any constituency), Health & Science Quarterly (Summer 2004-final edition);
-2nd Place, Best Special Event, Five-Year Fiesta Celebration.

“This was quite a surprise,” said Kay Colley, acting director of marketing and communications. “It’s always nice to have your work recognized as excellent. We are honored to have won against such stiff competition. These awards not only show the excellence within our own department, but the excellent programs that the UNT Health Science Center participates in, such as the Hispanic Wellness Fair and Research!America, which both won for their categories.”

Pieces produced from Jan. 1, 2004, to June 30, 2005, were eligible for the competition.

Current marketing and communications staff members who worked on the winning projects are Kay Colley and April Eubanks, publications manager. Former marketing and communications staff members who worked on the Health & Science Quarterly final edition were Lisa Orr and Kristie Aylett.
