JOHNSON JOINS HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER TO CHAIR TWO DEPARTMENTS

EricJohnson.jpg Eric Johnson, MD, PhD, has joined UNT Health Science Center as chair of the Department of Epidemiology and chair of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health.

Dr. Johnson was at Tulane University’s School of Public Health until just before Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. He had accepted his two positions at the health science center on a part-time basis until Jan. 1, 2006, but moved to a full-time basis after evacuating from New Orleans.

Dr. Johnson’s areas of research include the investigation of whether viruses that commonly infect or cause cancer in poultry, cattle and pigs can also cause cancer in humans and the investigation of the role of chemicals in the occurrence of cancer in humans.

A native of Sierra Leone, Dr. Johnson studied medicine at the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in England and earned a diploma in tropical public health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a master of public health degree from Harvard University and a doctorate in epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.

He currently resides in Fort Worth.
