Sickle cell disease is a type of hereditary blood disorder affecting red blood cells. The cells contain an abnormal type of hemoglobin, the main substance of the red blood cell, which can result in sickle-shaped cells. These cells often have difficulty passing through small blood vessels, causing a lack of blood flow to certain parts of the body. Complications of sickle cell disease result from the lack of blood flow. There is currently no cure for sickle cell disease.

The UNT Health Science Center is located at 3500 Camp Bowie Boulevard in the cultural district of Fort Worth.
