FORT WORTH, Texas— The University of North Texas Health Science Center has named Marc B. Hahn, D.O., dean of the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM).

Dr. Hahn’s appointment, which officially takes place Sept. 1, pending approval by the UNT Board of Regents, ends a nationwide search to fill the TCOM deanship.

"Dr. Hahn is an excellent physician, teacher, and administrator," said Ronald Blanck, D.O., health science center president. "These skills will serve him well as he guides the medical school."

Dr. Hahn, 49, is currently a professor of anesthesiology and director of the Pain Medicine Fellowship Program at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. He is also the chief of the Pain Medicine Division at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

He was a 1998-1999 Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow at the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. In that capacity, he served as a Health Advisor to the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance.

Dr. Hahn obtained his undergraduate degree from Syracuse University and his medical degree from Des Moines University. He completed his internship and residency in anesthesiology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He then completed a fellowship in pain management through both Georgetown University and the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Hahn is board certified in anesthesiology with sub-specialty certification in pain management.

Dr. Hahn served for 12 years in the U.S. Army, prior to an honorable discharge at the rank of Major. While in the army, Dr. Hahn was stationed at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the Uniformed Services University. While in the Army, he served as an anesthesiologist for two U.S. Presidents.

Dr. Hahn has been elected president of the American Academy of Pain Medicine, for the term beginning in February 2002. Dr. Hahn is an active member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Board of Anesthesiology. He also serves on the Board of Directors for several medical-related corporations and foundations.

Dr. Hahn is active in clinical research, having published multiple abstracts, book chapters, book reviews, editorials, and scientific papers. His textbook, Regional Anesthesia: An Atlas of Anatomy and Technique, was recognized as the Best New Textbook in Clinical Medicine by the Association of American Publishers. The second edition of this text is in progress. He also served as an associate editor for the 3rd edition of the preeminent and authoritative textbook, Practical Management of Pain.

The TCOM dean’s position became vacant last year when Benjamin Cohen, D.O., was promoted to provost and senior vice president for health affairs. Deborah Blackwell, D.O., has served as acting dean during the search process.

The Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine is Texas’ only college of osteopathic medicine and one of only 19 in the country. Roughly three-fourths of TCOM alumni practice primary care, such as family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology and pediatrics. This is the highest proportion among the state’s eight medical schools and one of the highest in the country. TCOM’s Physician Assistant Studies Program offers a master’s of science degree with a major in Physician Assistant Studies, one of the growing number of PA programs educating these mid-level medical professionals at the master’s level.
