Dr. Dahotre was named a Post-Doctoral Fellow by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Prior to UNT, he was a professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Tennessee, as well as chairman and vice-chairman for the Center of Excellence for Laser Applications. Dr. Dahotre has devoted his entire educational and professional career to developing laser-based surface engineering for advanced materials. He has made pioneering contributions to understanding and engineering laser-materials interactions and implementation of high power lasers for materials processing and surface engineering. He is internationally known for his work on fundamentals and applications of laser surface engineering of metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. He received the 2008 Faculty Award for Excellence in Service from the University of Tennessee Department of Materials Science and Engineering; the 2006 Metal Infusion Surface Treatment (MIST) R&D Award; the 2006 University of Tennessee Chancellor’s Research and Creativity Achievement Award; the 2006 University of Tennessee College of Engineering Research Fellow Award; the 2000 American Society for Materials International-Indian Institute of Metal Visiting Lecturer Award; the 1998 Ford Foundation Award; and the 1997 ALCOA Foundation Award. He was also elected to the 2004 Class of Fellows of American Society for Materials International.
