Celebrated writer and physician Richard Selzer, M.D., will share his thoughts on writing and medicine with students and faculty at the University of North Texas Health Science Center during two lectures Nov. 12.

He will discuss “The Doctor as Writer” at noon in Everett Hall in the health science center’s Research and Education Building. At 4 p.m., he will share “Doctors’ Stories” with first and second year medical students in Luibel Hall in the Education and Administration Building. Dr. Selzer is the author of numerous books of essays reflecting on his experiences as a surgeon, as well as several works of fiction and his autobiography. His work has been published in magazines such as the New York Times Magazine, Esquire, Harper’s Bazaar and numerous others.

Dr. Selzer received his medical degree from Albany Medical College and trained in general surgery at Yale University, where he later served as a professor for its medical school. Dr. Selzer practiced surgery for over 25 years before retiring from medicine in 1986. He has received several awards for his writing, including a National Magazine Award, a Pushcart Prize and a Guggenheim fellowship. His book The Doctor Stories was nominated for a PEN/Faulkner Award.
