FORT WORTH, Texas— Ronald Blanck, D.O., president of the University of North Texas Health Science Center, has been honored by the American Medical Association (AMA) with its highest award for public officials.

Dr. Blanck was one of 11 honorees to receive this year’s Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service from the AMA. The award is named for the association’s founding father.

“The Dr. Nathan Davis Awards highlight the significant accomplishments attained by men and women in government service who are giving of themselves to advance the well-being of all,” said AMA President Randolph Smoak, Jr., M.D.

Serving as the principal medical staff advisor to the Army Chief of Staff and the Commander of the U.S. Army Medical Command, Dr. Blanck was nominated by the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences for his extraordinary work in championing the readiness, quality and innovation of Army medicine and for his outstanding skills as a clinician and educator.

In addition to being a leader in the development of clinical practice guidelines and a noted defense expert on Gulf War Syndrome, Dr. Blanck raised the knowledge of chemical and bioterrorism, expanded the use of telemedicine and created new initiatives to speed evacuation from battlefields.

Dr. Blanck retired from the U.S. Army in July as a lieutenant general. He joined the UNT Health Science Center in August as president.

The award was presented at a banquet in Washington, DC, in July.
