English Language Proficiency

All applicants to UNT must show proof of English language proficiency.

See the list of acceptable measures below.

1.
English study at IELI:

  • Completion of Level 6 of the IELI programs. This qualifies you to apply for:
    • All undergraduate degree programs
    • Most graduate degree programs (check with your department)


2.
Completion of a program:

  • U.S. High School:
    • Official transcript showing graduation from accredited U.S. high school or U.S. Department of Defense School overseas-attended for at least 3 years
    • Send your SAT or ACT scores!
  • U.S. Degree:
    • Official transcript of U.S. Associate's, Bachelor's, Master' or Doctoral degree
  • High School/degree in English- speaking country:
    • Graduation with a diploma/degree (High School--attended for a least 3 years or standard period of attendance as required by country, Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree) from an accredited school in a recognized English-speaking country listed below.

3. English language proficiency tests accepted by UNT: Arrange to have official test scores sent to UNT.

  • UNT test score reporting code (TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, GRE/GMAT): 6481
  • TOEFL/IELTS scores must be less than 2 years old.  Student may provide a certified older score if student has been continuously studying at a U.S. college or institution.

4. Courses/degrees/diplomas: 

  • IB (International Baccalaureate)
    • Grade 5 or higher in English subject
  • English composition 1 & 2: Students must complete at least 24 transferrable semester units AND complete English composition 1 & 2 at an accredited U.S. college or university, which also must count as transferrable courses to UNT.  ESL courses will not count as transferrable courses.  No online English courses are accepted for English proficiency.
