UNT Winning Students in the Dallas Career Day Fashion Design Competition

On Friday, April 12th, 2013 the Fashion Design students at UNT participated in the 45th annual Fashion Group International’s Career Day at the World Trade Center in Dallas, Texas.  This event is a one-day educational symposium created to mentor and develop tomorrow’s leaders and entrepreneurs in the fashion industry.  It is the largest event of its kind in the United States.  It has over 1,200 participants from 42 schools in 10 states.  The finale of the event is a juried fashion design competition presented in a runway show exhibiting hundreds of students’ designs from schools nationwide.  At the end of the show students are presented with awards for excellence in design.  Total design submissions  for the event were 497 garments for which 200 were selected to walk the runway and this year UNT had 41 garments walk the runway.  The University of North Texas excelled once again this year receiving the following awards and the faculty in the Fashion Design department congratulates the following students:

Summer 2013 internship at Nicole Miller

Intern Responsibilities (unpaid):
File and organize patterns, cutters musts, fit notes, etc… Order tracings and cut them out, label them, notch them, and take them to the pattern maker. Go to the factories to spec check garments being shipped out. Spec sample garments. Trace, and sometimes cut out, label, and notch hard paper patterns. Prepare samples (spec and sometimes iron/steam) and create/update fit note sheets before fittings. Assist and stand in on fittings. Reference data in AS400 for organization and updating line sheets and fit notes. Open and prepare packages to and from warehouse/stock. Sometimes cut out fabric for garments when needed. And assist Production/Technical Design team as needed; demonstrate corrections in programs such as Excel, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

Summer Internship at The Apparel Group


Position Title: Summer 13 Design Administrator Internship

Duties and Responsibilities:
Ø  Maintain and organize fabric library, this includes hanging up fabric cards and clearing out outdated hangers. (May require climbing up and down on ladders)
Ø  Set up courier packages to vendors and customers
Ø  Clean and organize design areas
Ø  Swatch and file testing fabric qualities with copies of test report in Non-Iron binders. Maintain and organized these binders.
Ø  Log in new developments such as trial weaves, handlooms, and lab dips
Ø  Receive and stamp date on fabric hangers or swatches.
Ø  Assists with presentation materials such as cutting swatches, spray mounting images, etc.
Education, Knowledge and Skills:
Ø  Must be detail oriented and ability to multi tasks
Ø  Strong organizational and communication skills
Ø  Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Notes)
Ø  Love to work with fabric.
