Law Librarian and Legal Informatics

The law librarianship and legal informatics program of study will prepare graduates for careers in law libraries, information organizations using legal information resources and information publishers. Law librarians play key roles as information professionals in the management of information, training, and information organization in many diverse settings including law schools, courts, private law firms, corporations, government departments and agencies, or in correctional institutions.

General Requirements

  1. Total coursework is 36 credit hours (12 courses).
  2. Enroll in SLIS 5090 (practicum/practicum) unless officially waived based on previous professional and industry experience.
  3. During the final semester before graduation, enroll in End of Program Assessment and take and pass the comprehensive examination.

Required Courses (9 hours)

SLIS 5000 – Information and Knowledge Professions
SLIS 5200 – Information Organization
SLIS 5600 – Information Access and Knowledge Inquiry

Guided Electives

Completion of at least two of the following major prescribed courses (6 hours) with the guidance of the academic advisor:

SLIS 5080 – Research Methods and Analysis
SLIS 5210 – Organization and Control of Information Resources I
SLIS 5223 – Metadata and Networked Information Organization/Retrieval
SLIS 5300 – Management of Information Agencies
SLIS 5400 – Information Resources Development

Completion of at least two courses (6 hours) from the list of courses below with the guidance of the academic advisor:

SLIS 5366 – Law Library Management
SLIS 5647 – Legal Information Access and Services
SLIS 5960 – Advanced Legal Information and Legal Informatics

General Electives

Completion of additional four elective courses (12 hours) from the categories listed below including SLIS 5090 Practicum if it is not waived by the advisor.

SLIS 5713 – Telecommunications for Information Professionals
SLIS 5714 – Web Content Development and Maintenance
SLIS 5730 – Microcomputer Applications for Information Management
SLIS 5750 – Automation and Information Processing

Management

SLIS 5303 – Financial and Human Resource Management in Information Agencies
SLIS 5305 – Systems Analysis and Design
SLIS 5306 – Project Management for Information Systems
SLIS 5960 – Knowledge Management
SLIS 5960 – Information Policy SLIS 5960 – Intellectual Property for Information
