By choosing music education as your major, you will be prepared for a career as a professional music teacher. UNT's music education degree program leads to Texas teacher certification in all-level music, opening an array of employment options. Teaching is an exciting and fulfilling career choice for those interested in blending musicianship and teaching skills. Music educators enjoy the process of providing musical experiences that lead to a better understanding and appreciation of music. To be a music teacher, you must not only be an accomplished musician, but also be interested in the art of teaching.

As a Texas certified music educator, you may teach instrumental or vocal music at the elementary or secondary level. With a bachelor's degree in music education from UNT, you could work as an elementary music specialist or as a middle school/high school band, choir, or orchestra director.

The University of North Texas has one of the most highly acclaimed music education programs in the United States. Student Spotlights

Steve Smith, Master’s Student

stevesmith.jpg“After twelve years as a middle school band director, I needed a fresh approach to both music and teaching.  I knew my strengths as an educator, but my time at North Texas has allowed me to discover several potential areas of growth.  The MUED Master’s program offers many wonderful classes with the flexibility to tailor my coursework to meet my individual needs.  Through a variety of teaching opportunities within the MUED Department and interaction with each of the MUED faculty members, I have been able to expand upon and refine my teaching philosophy.  In addition to the exceptional MUED faculty, it is amazing to tap into the vast resources of North Texas College of Music.  The ability to associate and learn from the many world-class musicians and educators throughout the college has proven to be an invaluable aspect of my time there.  The U.N.T.  Master’s Program has been the perfect companion to my teaching career and is providing a springboard into the next stage of my work as a music educator.”

Heather Ramsey, Undergraduate Student

heatherramsey.jpg"My most memorable experiences have been taking both the Kodaly and Orff in Context classes. I got learn about different teaching methods, the history of the countries, the culture, art, and learn basic conversational languages. I also got to travel to Hungary and Austria and visit the Kodaly and Orff Institutes. I had a lot of fun with the people and faculty that went on the trip and have made friendships to last a lifetime.

The classes within the MUED department have all been wonderful in training me for what I want to do. The conducting and methods classes have been some of my favorite. In conducting, I get to study scores and conduct a small ensemble made up of the members of the class, and in methods classes I get to learn to play every instrument in a wind ensemble and orchestra and learn to sing correctly. Though almost done with my degrees at UNT, I know the MUED department has equipped me with the ability to teach well and be successful. I am so grateful for all the faculty I have studied with and all the faculty that make this department so wonderful."
