UNT Jewish Studies Program to host two guest speakers

What: Meir Shlomo, consul general of Israel to the Southwest, and Dr. Alan Rosen, Holocaust scholar from Jerusalem, will both speak at the University of North Texas the week of Oct. 22. Their lectures are sponsored by UNT’s Jewish Studies program.

When/Where: Shlomo will speak at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 23 (Tuesday) in the Golden Eagle Suite on the third level of UNT’s University Union, located at 1155 Union Circle. Rosen will speak at 7 p.m. Oct. 25 (Thursday) in Room 170 of UNT’s Business Leadership Building, located at 1307 W. Highland Street.

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The University of North Texas Jewish Studies Program will host two guest speakers in late October.

The first, Meir Shlomo, consul general of Israel to the Southwest, will speak at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 23 (Tuesday) in the Golden Eagle Suite on the third level of UNT’s University Union, which is located one block west of Welch and West Prairie streets. The second speaker, Alan Rosen, is a Holocaust scholar from Jerusalem. His lecture, title, will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 25 (Thursday) in Room 170 of UNT’s Business Leadership Building, located at 1307 W. Highland Street.

Shlomo assumed the position as the Southwest community ambassador and consul general of Israel, based in Houston, in August 2010. It serves a five-state region that includes Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma. He has more than 29 years of experience in Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Prior to his current position, Shlomo completed a four-year term as the Head of Mission at the Consulate General of Israel to New England in Boston, where he led Israel’s diplomacy campaigns at Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and The Boston Globe. Shlomo speaks Hebrew, English and Spanish.

Rosen specializes in Holocaust literature, Shakespeare and early modern drama. He is the author and editor of several books and has published dozens of articles pertaining to Jewish studies. He has worked as a lecturer, visiting lecturer and senior lecturer at several U.S. universities including Boston University, the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and the University of Pennsylvania.
