Reporter joins staff

The Kaufman Herald is pleased to welcome Bobby Lewis to the staff as the sports and schools reporter for the paper.

Lewis grad-uated from the University of North Texas in May with a bachelor's degree in journalism. Prior to coming to Kaufman, he wrote for The North Texas Daily, UNT’s student newspaper, as a sports reporter for four semesters before becoming the sports editor during his graduating semester.

Lewis also wrote for The Dallas Morning News as a breaking news intern for four months last fall. Lewis was born in Lich, Germany, to Bobby and Nicol Lewis on Oct. 19, 1990. His father retired from the...

Growing up in Washington, D.C., after her parents fled the Jim Crow South, Isabel Wilkerson felt like she was raised as the daughter of immigrants.

Her father, a civil engineer from Virginia, and her mother, a teacher from Georgia, held old world values from their former homelands where oppression was the everyday landscape and lynchings occurred every few days.

GRAPEVINE — Throughout the hotel lobby, discussions of Freedom of Information Act requests, DNA evidence and FBI reports with missing paragraphs echoed in the hallways, noted Isabel Wilkerson. "What a bunch of narrative nonfiction nerds," Wilkerson joked during her keynote speech at the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference on Sunday. EDITOR’S NOTE: Students from the University of North Texas Mayborn School of Journalism wrote about people and places around Denton County as part of their spring coursework. This story and upcoming stories feature their work, which also will be showcased in Discovering Denton County — a special publication due out June 24.

The winter had once again come through and stripped the orchard of its fruit, leaving only skeletons of the bountiful trees.
