Books and E-Books
Books can be found in these locations:

  • More than 27,000 books are housed on Level 3. They are arranged according to the National Library of Medicine classification schedule, supplemented with Library of Congress classification numbers for non-medical subject areas.
  • New books -- those published within the current year and the last two years -- are located at the Service Desk on Level 2; please request them by call number. 
  • A small number of reference books are located in the Reference Office on Level 2.
  • The Library subscribes to several online e-book collections such as AccessMedicine, MDConsult, Stat!Ref, and to hundreds of individual e-book titles.

Records in the online Library Catalog contain links to e-books and describe the call number, location, holdings information, and availability for physical books.  To find items in this category, search the Library Catalog.

Journals
Lewis Library provides more than 16,000 journals online, as well as a small number of print journals located on Level 3. Bound and unbound journals are shelved together there, arranged alphabetically by keywords in the title. The print journals do not circulate.  To find items in this category, search the Journal Finder; it searches both print and online formats.

Course Reserves
Faculty members may request that books, articles, or other materials used in their course be placed on reserve at the Service Desk or made available online. They select the loan period for physical items, which can be two hours, four hours, 24 hours, or three days.  Two-hour and four-hour reserve items must be used in the Library. Media
This collection consists of materials in CD, DVD, audiocassette, videocassette, and slide formats, as well as charts and anatomical models. New titles are purchased primarily upon recommendation by faculty members. Located on Level 2 behind the Service Desk. Please request items by call number; staff members can assist you as needed. Point of Care
These electronic clinical decision tools are designed for quick retrieval of information by healthcare providers.  Features typically include structured summaries for a wide range of conditions and interventions, evaluation and synthesis of the most relevant evidence, and links to original studies.  To find items in this category, visit the Point-of-Care Resources page or the Databases page.

Reference Collection
This is a non-circulating collection located in the Reference Office on Level 2. It contains bibliographies, biochemical handbooks, dictionaries, directories, drug handbooks, encyclopedias, general handbooks, grant information, literature guides, medical handbooks, statistics, and style manuals. Special Collections
Located on Level 3 of the Library, the Special Collections area houses rare, valuable, and fragile materials. These items are available upon request for use in the Library (see the Special Collections page for details). Through its special collections, the Lewis Library is devoted to preserving the heritage of osteopathic medicine and the history of the UNTHSC campus.  The collections are: the 19th-Century American Medicine Collection, Institutional Archives, the William G. Sutherland Collection, the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association Archives, and the Oral History Collection. To find items in this category, search the Library Catalog.

Test Preparation Collection
These items help to prepare students to take the USMLE, COMLEX, and medical specialty examinations. Most are in outline or question/answer format. The collection is located on Level 2 behind the Service Desk. Please request items there by call number; staff members can assist you as needed. Theses and Dissertations
Contains theses, dissertations, problems-in-lieu of thesis, and projects authored by UNTHSC students. Circulating print copies are located on Level 3; the call numbers begin with W 4, W 4.5, or W 4.8. We also preserve an archival copy of all theses and dissertations in the Library's Special Collections. Beginning with 2008, all theses and dissertations are available online. UNTHSC Scholarly Repository
The Scholarly Repository preserves and provides online access to works created by UNTHSC faculty, staff, and students.  These are in a variety of formats, including theses and dissertations, conference posters and papers, university publications, and continuing education programs.  The Scholarly Repository also contains historical books and journals in the fields of osteopathic medicine and forensics.  It is indexed by major search engines, providing global access for researchers and enhancing the visibility of our campus.  To find items in this category, search or browse the UNTHSC Scholarly Repository.

Book Exchange
Located at the main entrance to the Library, this collection contains popular fiction, mainly in paperback format. It is not cataloged.  Check-out is on the honor system of "take one, leave one."
