Coffee shop owners say consistency key in somewhat flooded market

Denton has a lot to offer when it comes to coffee, from Jupiter House on the Square to Big Mike’s Coffee near the University of North Texas to Banter Bistro just off the Square.

And while each takes a slightly different approach, they all agree the key to succeeding in a somewhat flooded market is to offer a consistently good cup of coffee.

Amy and Joey Hawkins, who own Jupiter House, shut down its second location, Jupiter House Europa, at the end of October because business wasn’t good.

“We put three years into it,” Amy Hawkins said.

Council OKs further steps for project

The Denton City Council gave staff the go-ahead to apply for a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation that would help pay for a trail and bridge in Evers Park.

The staff told the council that, because the engineering work is already finished for the bridge, the project should be competitive.

“We’ve been trying to build a bridge over that drainage channel for years,” said Emerson Vorel, head of the city’s parks and recreation department.

The city hopes to use one of the county’s historic iron bridges for another, smaller channel crossing, Vorel said.

The Kaufman Herald is pleased to welcome Bobby Lewis to the staff as the sports and schools reporter for the paper.

Lewis grad-uated from the University of North Texas in May with a bachelor's degree in journalism. Prior to coming to Kaufman, he wrote for The North Texas Daily, UNT’s student newspaper, as a sports reporter for four semesters before becoming the sports editor during his graduating semester.

Lewis also wrote for The Dallas Morning News as a breaking news intern for four months last fall. Lewis was born in Lich, Germany, to Bobby and Nicol Lewis on Oct. 19, 1990. His father retired from the...

UNT notebook: McCarney to scrutinize roster

North Texas still has two crucial games left in its season, beginning with a road showdown at Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday.

UNT still has a chance to become bowl-eligible and reach the .500 mark by beating a pair of teams that already have hit the six-win mark in ULM and Western Kentucky.

Reaching that goal has the Mean Green’s full attention.

Head coach Dan McCarney said this week that he’s ready to take a long, hard look at his roster after that final game against WKU, when he and his staff will evaluate the program from top to bottom.

Eddy, a small-time Chicago crook, learns to take a leap of faith through his interactions with the people he meets in a fictional Texas town in George Anson’s feature film debut, “Spring Eddy.”
