The 3rd Brigade Panthers descended on Blackwell St., the promenade at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on game days, and set up interactive displays of some crowd-pleasing equipment and personnel.

Maj. Gen. John Campbell, Commanding General of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) located at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, visited Chicago 13-15 June 2011 to celebrate the Army's 236th Birthday. During his visit he met with members of the World Presidents' Organization, National Strategy Forum, Pritzker Military Library, USO of Illinois, Boys & Girls Club, and 502 Club at the Union League Club. Maj. Gen. Campbell also threw out the first pitch at the Chicago Cubs game on 14 June in honor of the Army's Birthday.

Wylie Hutchison, the senior noncommissioned officer for the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, honored former President Dwight Eisenhower June 14 during a wreath laying ceremony at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene. The ceremony, conducted on the Army’s 236th birthday, honored Eisenhower for the three years he served as the Army Chief of Staff, from 1945 " 1948. The Department of Defense mandates that all deceased former Army Chiefs of Staff be honored on the Army’s birthday with a wreath laying ceremony.

PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. - The Directorate of Public Works recently installed solar streetlight fixtures on an environmentally sensitive walkway between the north and south water basin. The pathway runs between the Picatinny Chapel and Child Development Center, allowing passage for residents without having to walk along the main roads. Because of concerns with standard streetlight installations, the use of solar power not only solved our environmental concerns, but brings us one step closer to increasing our energy efficiency with renewable energy.

Manor View Elementary School's first Edible Art Competition combined creativity with confections. The competition room was filled with the smell of sweet things to eat, the bright colors of the "art" and the excited squeals of children. The contest on April 6 was part of the school's Book Fair, which ran from April 5-8. More than 50 students from kindergarten to high school participated in the competition. There was an adult category as well.

Staff Sgt. Alan Martin and his wife, Megumi, were celebrating the birth of their daughter Maria when, eight days later, on March 11, a devastating earthquake and tsunami hit northeast Japan. On March 18, the Department of Defense and the Department of State issued a directive that authorized the voluntary departure of eligible family members of U.S. government personnel in Japan. Soon afterwards, the Japanese government issued a warning about traces of radiation in the country's water and its unsuitability for consumption by young children. The Martins were living at Camp Zama, an Army installation 25 miles southwest of Tokyo and about 165 miles from Futaba, site of the earthquake and tsunami.

Building resilience into the Army team, from Soldiers to spouses to children, is now taking center stage at most Army installations. In that spirit, Joint Base Lewis-McChord's Army Community Services has launched the new spouse resiliency academy, using civilian and military master resilience trainers as part of the Army's Comprehensive Soldier Fitness program for spouses. The academy develops and institutes a holistic fitness program for families to enhance performance and build resilience. Like Soldiers, the spouse resiliency academy offer spouses detailed knowledge and learning opportunities on the six competencies associated with resilience: self-awareness, self-regulation, optimism, mental agility, strength of character and staying connected. Spouses learn specific skills within each competency to identify strengths in themselves and others to overcome challenges and build effective families.

Three weeks ago, during my monthly Veteran of Foreign War (VFW) meeting, our organization signed a card for one of our departed members. Having been a member for less than a year, I didn't know the man very well. I saw him a few times at our meetings before he became hospitalized. He was an elderly black man, wheelchair bound and supporting an oxygen tube, a far cry from the young man who once took up arms against America's enemies.

Five thousand, one hundred and one dollars. That's how much was recently donated to Fort Bragg's Fisher House as local motorcycle builder Hot Rodz auctioned a custom bike and presented all proceeds to the organization that assists Soldiers and Families in need. The motorcycle, began life as a 1977 Harley Davidson Springer and Hot Rodz added a lot of parts taken from around the shop, to go along with various outsourced parts, including many that were donated by various vendors.

FORT HOOD, Texas -The Fort Hood Recycle Center and Killeen Independent School District have formed a partnership in which the garrison will provide recycle services to the Meadows and Duncan Elementary Schools. Next school year, the recycling effort could be extended to nine campuses on Fort Hood.
