    Seven company guidons stood covered in front of Soldiers standing in formation during a reactivation ceremony held on Feb. 11 at Myitkyina Field. The 27th Engineer Battalion officially unveiled the battalion colors during the ceremony and deactivated the rear detachment company as they transformed the battalion back to garrison operations.

Partial proceeds from Rockin' the Cage went to the Special Forces Association, Chapter I-XVIII and Afghan war veterans.

    The Fort Bragg Recycling Incentives Program was launched in March of 2008 as a way for military units and agencies across the installation to reduce waste and recycle post commodities. Participants in the program collect and donate cardboard, office paper, aluminum cans and plastic bottles to the Fort Bragg Recycling Center where the materials are weighed and recorded. The recorded weights are then transferred into a value and the amount is issued to the donating unit or organization as a voucher that may be applied at any FMWR resource.

    The Fort Bragg Warrior Transition Battalion's Unit Ministry Team sponsored the first, of the 10 "Great Dates," that started in September 2010. The WTB's dates, held once a month, are hosted at local restaurants. At each date, the couples review one chapter of "10 Great Dates to Energize Your Marriage" by David and Claudia Arpthe so that each couple can further their communication skills and strengthen their marriage.

    The start of the Fire and Emergency Service's rescue exercise on Jan. 20, saw Battalions 1 and 2 headed across post to the simulated vehicle accident. The "accident' involved a tiny Honda Accord and a five-ton military truck. This type of scenario allows rescuers to be prepared to face a dangerous situation when and if they come upon such an accident.

    Dining at Fort Bragg is no longer a diet-buster as almost every establishment now offers healthy dining options. Subway's Fresh Fit menu provides eight sandwiches with less than six grams of fat, baked chips and a diet beverage. Burger King allows diners to select a side salad instead of fries for the same price. Also there is the "Fit Pick" program, created by the National Automatic Merchandising Association, "Fit Pick" educates Americans about the role of healthy snacks and the importance of a balanced diet and physical activity.

    Jose Aguimatang and Ksenia Kulik graduated Albritton Middle School and set aside the lazy days of summer for a volunteer stint with the American Red Cross, Fort Bragg/Pope Army Airfield. This started a partnership that would lasted through high school. On Jan. 26, the teens received prestigious Iron Mike pins in a ceremony that honored the service of Fort Bragg volunteers.

    The 82nd Sustainment Brigade opened the doors to a new Family readiness group center on Fort Bragg, that will provide a centralized location for those servicemembers and Family members involved in the unit's FRG.     The AH-64D Apache aircraft has been called a flying tank - the most lethal aircraft ever created - But training on multi-million dollar aircraft when you're half a world away from a Middle Eastern conflict can be tricky. Fort Bragg has a training simulator created by the Boeing Corporation that features a solid, two-trailer combination, which resembles an enclosed, mobile sound stage. Inside, the simulator houses a cockpit, which features separate aviator seats, complete with screens, and a vast computer system that connects a mass of hardware and software for prime operability.

    Fort Bragg ushered in the new decade with a softer-sounding chug, thanks to USAX 6508, a firebrick red engine commissioned for service on Dec. 15, 2010. The new model replaces one of two train engines that hauled military equipment for more than 20 years. The new engine runs on ultra-low sulfur fuel, an improved grade of diesel designed to lower emissions of particulate matter with a 2,900-gallon tank capacity of "greener" fuel, which will leave a lighter railmark for decades to come.

  • Band building well underway as new year begins

    In spite of the cold weather, the new Army Ground Forces Band building is still tracking on schedule. "We should finish the shingles in a couple of weeks and then work will focus mostly on the inside," said Project Manager George V. Blackard of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Fort Bragg office. "Exterior brick work will also begin in a few weeks, which will bring out the true shape and color of the building." The placement of interior studs is well underway as are the mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins. The band will move to Fort Bragg with Headquarters, Army Forces Command, the summer of 2011, in accordance with the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure legislation.

For the Bag the Bag initiative, the Chico Bag ™ Bag Monster visited Albritton School and Irwin School to educate classes about recycling and the disadvantages of plastic bags. Albritton School students admonished the Bag Monster with chants of "You should be recycled!" and "See you in the recycling bin!"

Kamal Kalsi marks the fourth generation of serving in the military, with his great-grandfather having served in the Royal British army and his grandfather and father having served in the air force in India. Kalsi is a Soldier in the United States Army, assigned to Womack Army Medical Center's Emergency Department. Kalsi is a Sikh, which has been classified as the fifth largest religion in the world.

    A flame from Bethlehem, spread its message of hope and light to Fort Bragg Dec. 1. The chief of staff of religious support operations at Fort Bragg, drove to Maryland to bring back the Peace Light to the Cumberland County area. Each year a child from Austria fetches the light from the grotto in Bethlehem where Christians believe that Jesus was born. The Peace Light is flown to New York where people across the country take the light back with them to spread to other communities.

    Sgt. Eugene Deibler Jr., of the 501 Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101 Airborne Division survived the June 6, 1944, jump onto the beaches of Normandy, France, he saved a piece of his silk reserve parachute. When he asked his girlfriend to marry him, she said yes and converted the parachute into an elegant wedding dress. On Nov. 21, Deibler donated Mary's silk dress to the Airborne and Special Operations Museum in a private Family gathering.

    The 126th Transportation Company, 82nd Sustainment Brigade was busy competing and being ealuated for the 43rd Annual Philip A. Connelly Active Army Field Kitchen Competition. The competition evaluates Army cooks throughout the force in 10 categories. Currently the top four teams of the competition are going through evaluations to determine a winner, which will be announced Dec. 15.

The volunteers gathered pine straw, weeded, cleaned McFadyen Pond, tended plants, removed garbage and planted trees and shrubs - all as a memorial to battalion member Spc.     High-mobility, multipurpose wheeled vehicle egress assistance training, HEAT, trainer has cycled around 500 to 1,000 servicemembers since beginning operation in September of 2008. The HEAT simulator is an M1114, or uparmored humvee, frame mounted on a 360-degree rotation axle that when in operation, simulates a rollover situation.The HEAT trainers will certify Soldiers at the unit level so that those Soldiers can train their unit on the procedures.

    A recent XVIII Airborne Corps policy bans the use and possession of Spice. As of early November, legislation has been introduced in North Carolina state government to make the dangerous substance illegal. Spice and other synthetic cannabinoids are prohibited and violators of the policy will face punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

    More than 100 community members gathered at Womack Army Medical Center's Weaver Auditorium Oct. 26, in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and as a way to remember victims of domestic violence. A member of the hospital's Pediatrics Clinic staff conducted a session that explained what others can do if they or someone close to them is a victim of domestic violence. The class also included information about how domestic violence affects everyone and on what has become an increasing trend - teen domestic violence.

    The Fisher House provides a valuable service military Families during medical crises, allowing them to remain close as a Soldier receives life-sustaining treatment or medical care. For all that Fisher House has given to the community, local motorcycle builder Hotrodz has decided to give some back. The shop has taken a wrecked, 1977 Harley-Davidson motorcycle and is in the process of transforming it into a custom, bobber-style bike. The bike is expected to be complete in February and will be auctioned off to the public. Proceeds from the project will go to the Fisher House.

    A low slow electric vehicle, driven by a Soldier is used to shuttle residents of Linden Oaks accross a busy six lane highway. The vehicle was provided at the request of the garrison commander 'to support the safety of the Families,' said Timothy Shea, DOL transportation chief. The garrison has offered Linden Oaks housing residents this service until work is completed to make a marked walkway with electronic pedestrian signals, estimated to be completed in May 2011. A team of three Soldiers drive the LSEV every day from 2 to 8 p.m.

    The Carolina Raptor Center released a bald eagle at Mott Lake. The eagle was nursed back to health by the CRC and released into the wild at Fort Bragg. But according to Dave Heins, chief of the Environmental Division, the release also accomplishes another goal - it helps improve wildlife and recovers some of the endangered species that are on the installation.

    On the sunny morning of Oct. 22, teachers and students alike gathered outside of Irwin Elementary School to encourage and surprise one of their own - Brenda Warren, a science teacher who has been walking every day for the last month to prepare for the nearly 40 mile walk in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer event. The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer events are hosted in several cities across the United States each year, and each participant must raise at least $1,800 to participate - Brenda Warren, with the help of some of the staff at Irwin Elementary School, raised $5,500.

    About 30 U.S. Army Forces Command and U.S. Army Reserve Command Soldiers and civilian personnel arrived in 'Carolina Country' Monday. They are part of the first large group of personnel to in-process at Fort Bragg from Fort McPherson, Ga. Added to the 'Torch Party' that arrived in August, and the liaison team that has been here since last summer, there are now 190 Soldiers and Army civilians on the ground. About 350 personnel are expected by the end of November.

Jennifer Dempsey on the day she applied for the Interservice Physician Assistant Program. Dempsey joined a growing number of Soldiers who are committed to serving both their country and compatriots. On Fort Bragg, PAs provide primary health care for Soldiers and their Family members, often taking the place of licensed physicians in clinics and in the field. On a typical day, a PA can record medical histories, perform physical exams, treat patient illnesses, assist surgeons and promote the health of the installation.
