Congressman Alexander Urges Residents to Prepare for Isaac

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Jamie Hanks | (202) 225-8490

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander (R-Quitman) urged residents of Louisiana to brace for impact as Tropical Storm Isaac approaches Louisiana’s shores. Isaac is expected to make landfall early Wednesday afternoon, and may reach 5th District residents by Wednesday night.

“The time to prepare is now, not the day of the storm,” Alexander said. “I strongly encourage all residents of Louisiana to begin making preparations to weather this storm. This is not something to be taken lightly.”

Even those living well inland can face substantial impact from a hurricane, including strong winds and severe flooding. Additionally, residents should expect extended power outages. For a comprehensive list of preparations to make, everyone is encouraged to visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) preparedness website, www.ready.gov. Additionally, residents should continue to monitor communications and heed all recommendations made by state and local authorities. State information can be found from the Louisiana Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) at http://www.gohsep.la.gov/.

Alexander also encouraged citizens to assist elderly relatives and neighbors, who may be less capable of equipping themselves and their property for the looming storm. “Don’t just assume they will be okay,” Alexander said. “Give them a call or go knock on their door to be sure, and ask if there is anything you can do to help them.

“As we prepare to recognize the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, it is critical we don’t ignore its lessons as Isaac follows in its footsteps. Begin preparing now. We seldom regret the preparations we make; instead, the ones we regret are the ones we don’t make,” Alexander continued. “The severity of a storm is largely dependent upon not only how strong the storm is, but how prepared the people impacted are. I hope the people of Louisiana will take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety.”
