SAVANNAH, Ga. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District will begin work soon on phase two of the Winn Army Community Hospital expansion at Fort Stewart, Ga., following the recent award of a $37 million contract.

The contract, awarded to McCarthy Building Company, of St. Louis, Mo., includes a 43,637 square-foot addition and 55,000 square-foot alteration to the emergency, nutritional, and administrative departments and the outpatient ancillary. With the new renovations, the emergency department and family medical clinic will double in size, providing additional capacity needed to serve patients. An expanded laboratory blood draw area and additional pharmacy access windows will reduce wait times and further enhance the patient experience.

“This project will provide our soldiers, retirees, and family members with updated medical facilities that will accommodate new and evolving technologies, provide a healing environment, and empower patients, and families,” said Corps Project Manager Spencer Davis. “As a result of these alterations, more than 16,000 Soldiers, family members, and retirees, who are being treated within the network, will be able to receive enhanced medical care at Fort Stewart.”

The first phase of the project, also awarded to McCarthy, includes a 65,000 square-foot addition and 1,000 square-foot alteration to the hospital. The entire project is slated for completion in October 2016.

The Winn Army Community Hospital is a comprehensive health facility that serves approximately 25,000 service members and families who live and work in the Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield areas.

Like all Army construction, the altered portion of the hospital will incorporate environmentally friendly features. This “green” building will meet the criteria for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver, in accordance with the U.S. Green Building Council standards. Eco-friendly features include the use of energy efficient building materials, lighting and ventilation systems.

In addition to meeting high energy and environmental standards, Corps constructed medical facilities include features such as soothing colors, textures, furnishings, natural views, and controls that allow patients to adjust the temperature, lighting, and electronics.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Savannah District manages and oversees a multi-billion dollar military construction program at 11 Army and Air Force installations in Georgia and North Carolina.
