Grand Valley Transit Adds Two New Green Energy Buses

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Grand Valley Transit has added two new buses to it's fleet, both powered on compressed natural gas.

According to a resolution drafted last year, any future bus purchases will all have compressed natural gas fueling systems.

"Eventually our entire fleet or the majority of our fleet will move towards compressed natural gas," said Todd Hollenbeck, Regional Transportation Office Manager.

The two new buses will join two existing buses already in service that are powered from the green gas.

Considering the average cost of diesel fuel is $4.13 per gallon in Grand Junction and the equivalent cost of fuel per gallon of natural gas is $1.26 per gallon, GVT is satisfied with the fuel savings they are getting with their existing green buses.

"For the buses that we're filling up with diesel and the buses we are comparing that to are our compressed natural gas buses, we're seeing a $500 a month difference,"said Hollenbeck.

Hollenbeck hopes the two buses will likely hit the streets towards the end of 2013 but are eying the start of 2014 for the buses to definitely begin service.

Officials anticipate the entire fleet will be switched over to compressed natural gas by 2020.

Apparently we're entering the newest phase of natural gas marketing. "Green Energy Buses" powered by "Green Gas?" You cannot call this a "green" product without considering the air and water pollution created during the extraction process known as horizontal hydraulic fracturing or "fracking."

Where does all this bus stuff come from anyway....Check out some of the "really-large" metropolitan areas as find that regardless of how much money the taxpayers throw at the "mass-transit" system, the system still can not pay its own way and never will be able to.

Just curious who it is that pays for the buses. I have never seen one with more than just a few folks riding, mostly they are either empty or with one or two individuals.
