Levin Statement on the Fiscal Cliff

WASHINGTON – Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., made the following statement regarding the fiscal cliff:
“President Obama and Democrats campaigned on a promise of balanced deficit reduction that would raise revenues and cut spending. Governor Romney and Republicans opposed that agenda. On Tuesday, voters re-elected President Obama, elected an expanded Democratic majority in the Senate, and rejected Republican candidates mired in Tea Party extremism. The message was clear. Republicans should back away from the rigid ideology that has kept us from reaching agreement on these important issues and join with Democrats in avoiding damaging budget cuts and tax increases on the middle class. President Obama is right that they can start by doing what the Senate has already done and passing legislation to avoid a tax increase on middle-class families. The House should pass that bill right away. And we should work urgently to pass legislation that would ask the wealthiest Americans to pay a little more and close corporate loopholes that encourage some of the largest corporations to shift jobs and their profits offshore.”
