U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Tulsa, stands to take over as ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, due to the fact that Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has reached his term limit in that role.
Inhofe will be minority leader on the panel, because Democrats strengthened their majority in the Senate in Tuesday elections.
"Of course this is subject to the vote of the Republican members on the committee," Inhofe said in a statement.
Inhofe voiced concern about scheduled across-the-board cuts to defense in sequestration which Congress passed and President Obama signed in 2011. A lame duck session of Congress is being organized to attempt to alter or delay drastic cuts. Inhofe would not become ranking member until the 113th Congress is sworn in in January, after any lame-duck session to end this year.
