WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) issued the following statement today marking the eleventh anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

“Families in the District along with our residents are remembering lost loved ones and the many innocent victims as we observe the eleventh anniversary of the September 11^th terrorist attacks on our country today.  Among those we lost that fateful day were three D.C. public school students, three of their teachers, and two chaperones from National Geographic who were on board one of the hijacked jets.  We honored them all last year, especially the children who had just won a National Geographic contest, by planting trees in their memory.  We also will never forget the first responders in this region, New York, and Pennsylvania, the heroes who raced towards the crash sites, ready to save lives, regardless of personal risk.  We continue to make our country safer today, and we struggle to do so while maintaining an open society where people feel free to carry on their lives free of fear.  District residents, and the nation, will never forget the sacrifices of 11 years ago, nor the thousands of innocent lives taken from us all on that day.”
