11/16/2012 - JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas -- More than 80 lieutenant colonels and majors have been selected as Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps detachment commander candidates, Air Force Personnel Center officials announced.

Special duty command opportunities like this one are highly sought, said Master Sgt. Curtis Reese, AFPC Special Utilization Assignments superintendent.

"ROTC detachment commanders have significant influence as the first active-duty leaders students encounter," said Reese. "ROTC commanders lead and mold future Air Force leaders at a critical time in their education and development, so it's essential that highly motivated, strong leaders are assigned to command these detachments."

The Holm Center for Officer Accessions and Citizen Development has begun contacting candidates as part of the matching process, after which candidates will be nominated to universities nationwide, said Reese. Vacancies are subject to change, but to date 62 command opportunities exist.

"The process could take up to two months, after which the Holm center will work with AFPC and major commands to finalize assignment instructions," Reese said.

According to the master sergeant, candidates who are not matched to a command position will be placed on an alternate list and will be considered for unprogrammed vacancies.
