Micro-hydropower brings light to remote Afghan villages

The Panjshayr River in the village of Daste Riwat is channeled through a 2.5-meter-wide 1.7 kilometer long canal and through the use of a micro-hydropower plant installed back in January 2009. Because transformers are not required, the villagers are able to run 400 volts three-phase and send it straight to the villagers where it becomes 220 on a single-phase line. The installation of the unit was part of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contract awarded in late 2006 to Remote HydroLight and Advanced Engineering Associates International to construct 105 units in seven of 34 Afghan provinces.
