From California wine to coneys, all bets are on for World Series

Detroit - Apparently one manifestation of Tiger fever — at least when it comes to politicians — is betting.

At least six Michigan pols have been swept up in a wagering frenzy with their California counterparts over the World Series, which begins tonight.

The Tigers are playing the San Francisco Giants.

During this season of partisan sniping, it's good to see election officials battling over something that doesn't involve the presidential election.

"You don't mess with Motown," said Rep. Hansen Clarke.

He told Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi that he would treat her to coney dogs if the Giants won. She offered Ghirardelli chocolates, which originated in San Fran, if the Tigers won.

Clarke said the chocolates "will be an excellent complement to the sweet taste of victory."

Pelosi is something of a serial bettor. She also made wagers with Reps. John Dingell and Sander Levin.

There are poker dealers at Motor City Casino who see less gambling action than Pelosi.

In the Dingell bet, he will provide a gift basket from Zingerman's Delicatessen in Ann Arbor if the Giants win. If the Tigers win, Pelosi will have to spring for some more chocolates.

"America should know by now that it is never wise to bet against Detroit," said Dingell.

Michigan's two senators, Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin, made a wager with California's two senators, Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer.

The Michiganians are offering Michigan wine and chocolates from the state's very own Sanders if the Giants win.

The Californians countered with California wine and, what else, Ghirardelli chocolates if the Tigers win.

Detroit Mayor Bing made a bet with San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee. The loser will have to visit the winner's state and tour some of their companies.

Bing should stay away from the Ghirardelli factory. It's going to be making a lot of chocolate after the series is over.
