House Raises a Red Flag on Red Tape

One big headache that has small businesses “souring” on President Obama is the “tidal wave of federal regulations” that’s making it harder to hire.  Entrepreneurs and job creators looking for relief from the president’s red tape factory got some good news today when the House approved legislation focused on eliminating excessive regulations that hurt job creation and economic growth.

H.R. 4078, the Red Tape Reduction and Small Business Job Creation Act, is the latest in a series of House-passed jobs bills aimed at addressing overregulation, including the Pledge to America-based REINS Act, sponsored by Rep. Geoff Davis (R-KY).

Speaker Boehner, a former small business owner, welcomed today’s vote as a preview of the House’s next steps on jobs:

“Having run a small business, I know how costly and time-consuming all of Washington’s various processes, permits, and procedures can be, especially in the middle of tough times.   Jumping through all these hoops just to get a business up and running is the kind of hard work the president dismisses, and his policies make even harder.  Listening to small business owners, Republicans made a Pledge to America to rein in Washington’s red tape factory, and today we’ve taken another step in keeping that pledge.  Next week, the House will take another big step to help America’s entrepreneurs by voting to stop the small business tax hike that Ernst & Young says will destroy more than 700,000 jobs.”

Reducing the regulatory burden on small businesses, a pillar of Republicans’ Plan for America’s Job Creators, is a common-sense step backed by many economists and experts, including the president’s own job council.  (pages 4, 6, 9, etc.) Maybe the president ought to meet with them, or at least take the time to read the report he asked them to produce.  He’s also more than welcome to call on the Senate to take up House-passed jobs bills, like the one that passed today, which fix this problem.
