There is definitely a rope in the next picture. If you look at the larger version of it you can see someone's hand resting on it. Perhaps the line here really is a rope.

The man holding the flag is Giles Coons, my Great Great Grandfather John Rockwell's
(pictured behind him to the right in the white shirt) wife's brother. This is the 106th.
