Charleston Airmen return from war

Pearl Harbor pilots

Lts. Ken Taylor and George Welch responded to the Pearl Harbor attack by finding two unharmed P-40 fighters at Haleiwa Field. The two pilots shot down a total of six Japanese aircraft, and they were awarded the first Distinguished Flying Crosses of World War II (courtesy photo).

Remembering the Pearl Harbor attack

A ceremony at the Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, flagpole was held Dec. 7 to honor the 189 who died and 303 who were wounded during a surprise attack by Japanese fighter aircraft 65 years ago.
