ISRAEL BLOCKADE TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF NATION AND CITIZENS
6/17/10The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine generated increased public attention recently when a flotilla attempting to pass through Israel’s blockade of Gaza was intercepted by Israeli commandos after those on board refused to allow the Israelis to inspect its cargo. Israel is a long-time friend and strong ally of the United States and in the same way that we defend our nation and protect U.S. citizens; Israel has the right to defend its nation and citizens.
Although the loss of life as a result of this event is deeply regrettable, the purpose of Israel’s blockade is to ensure any cargo going into Gaza is safe and for humanitarian aid and that no weapons or arms that could threaten their safety are allowed through.
As a Member of the House Homeland Security Committee and having visited Israel last fall, it is important that U.S. support for Israel not waver, particularly as terrorist threats escalate in the Gaza region. I recently signed a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu along with many other Members of Congress to express our support for Israel's right and responsibility to continue to ensure the safety and protection of its citizens. Prime Minister Netanyahu has proposed an additional investigation into this matter independent of an investigation under the UN.
Additionally, I cosponsored legislation introduced by Congressman Peter King (R-NY), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, that would prohibit U.S. participation on the United Nations Rights Council and contributions to the United Nations if such funds are used for the purpose of any unwarranted or biased investigation into the flotilla event.
The blockade is a key component of maintaining peace and security in the region, and I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to maintain friendly relations between the U.S. and our democratic allies, like Israel.
