What district do I live in now?

In the past several weeks, there has been confusion over the redistricting process and when new district lines take effect.  I wanted to take some time today to clear up a lot of this confusion so that you know which office to contact if you need help.  Earlier this year, our office launched a webpage at http://toddyoung.house.gov/understanding-redistricting/.  This webpage explains the process in more detail, and has maps to help you figure out which district you are in now and which you will be in next year.  It’s important to remember that when a person wins an election to Congress in November, they don’t take office until the following January.  That means the district you lived in during the 2010 election is the district you live in until January 2013.

Why were the district lines redrawn?

Every ten years, the Constitution requires a census to be taken and Congressional districts to be reapportioned.  That is, Congressional districts must be reconfigured so that each district in a state contains roughly the same number of people.  That is one of the ways we guarantee that every citizen gets equal representation.  The last census was conducted in 2010, with data made available to each state in 2011 so that they could draw new lines for their state's Congressional districts.

Due to redistricting, Indiana’s 9th Congressional District will look significantly different starting on January 5th, 2013.  Until then I will be representing the current district.  This means that our office can still handle legislative inquiries and comments, constituent services, and other requests from the current district until January 5th. This includes people who voted in the 9th District in 2010, even if you did not vote in the 9th District in 2012.

What if I am changing districts and have outstanding casework?

Your casework will be transferred to your new congressional office at the beginning of the year.  The 9th District will acquire casework for the new counties and will begin to continue assistance for these cases starting in January.   For information about the services our office offers please visit http://toddyoung.house.gov/help-with-government-services-and-benefits/.

What counties are in the 9th District beginning in 2013?

New to the District: We cannot accept casework from people in these areas until January, but beginning in January we will be your Congressional office

Still in the District: We can continue to accept casework from people in these areas, and will continue serving you into the future

Leaving the District: We will continue to accept casework from people in these areas through the end of this year, and transfer your files to your new Representative in January
