  • a piece of iron that shows air between it's self and the ground if the large size of the image is inspected. appears to be part of a linkage steering system. Were iron to touch the ground in it's present position and weight of the car placed on it, that sized iron would bend. - CakesPix

Seemed like a rather ill-advised sport - but infinitely more entertaining than NASCAR!

One match, and they ran out of people and autos

Did anyone get killed playing this crazy game?

  5. scampion (55 months ago | reply)

Remarkable images! Everything is in motion.

  6. the other Martin Taylor (55 months ago | reply)

These look staged which was typical for the day and the equipment. The cars have no motion in them- the only movement is in the men being thrown. You can see something propping up the rear of the car on right. It is a great gag shot and really demonstrates the inventiveness of jobbing photographers of the day.

    good point, martin.

to my eye, it looks like there is an alteration to hide the same prop on the left car, too.

  8. corsec67 (55 months ago | reply)

trey kazee: Yep, it looks like it got scratched out there below the wheel and behind it. To me it looks like the support went up to the axle.

This is indeed a very cool setup.

great eye, Martin, it's hilarious they set these up. completely in the style of the "jobbing photographers of the day", as you put it. What a find.

oh humanity, what have you done now?

  11. Gamma Infinity (55 months ago | reply)

Yes, the cars are completely static. The wheel spokes are completely sharp, unheard of with the equipment of the day. This is definitely staged, probably to recreate real "thrills and spills" you'd see if you came to the real thing.

The "drivers" are jumping. Nice stunt work, if nothing else.

That ball park sure looks like Fenway, but I'm not sure. Seems like "auto polo" would be pretty hard on the grass, not to mention the players.

I agree throughly, this photo has been staged...!

Hi, LOC, I love these auto polo photos! I had no idea. I'm an admin for a group called www.flickr.com/groups/649247@N24/, and we'd love to have this added to the group -- if you do that sort of thing! Thanks and rock on Library of Congress! Also thanks to lifeasdaddy above for the linkage!

anybody who thinks this is fake has never been to a night at the supermodifieds. just like this except the roll cages are smaller and a guy only falls out once a season or so. no mallets but rolls like this about ten or twenty times a night. check it at ur local fairgrounds on saturday nights.

  21. the other Martin Taylor (45 months ago | reply)

CakesPix - may be so but the photography technology, chemistry and physics were not readily able to capture this kind of action in 1910.
