Director of Digital Access

The Folger Shakespeare Library invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of Digital Access. Founded in 1932, the Folger is home to the world’s largest collection of Shakespeare-related materials and the finest collection of early Continental and British printed works outside England. It offers an expansive range of scholarly, cultural, and educational outreach programs that inform, enrich, and entertain more than 100,000 individuals each year. With an endowment significantly above $200 million, the Library is administered by a Board of Governors under the auspices of Amherst College, founder Henry Clay Folger’s alma mater.

 

The Director of the Library seeks a dynamic individual to serve in the newly-created position of Director of Digital Access. This leadership position will work with other senior staff to expand the library’s existing digital outreach, create meaningful access to Folger expertise, and develop an infrastructure that will establish the Folger’s reputation as a center for the digital humanities.

 

The successful applicant will have an advanced degree and a record of accomplishment in online humanities scholarship and outreach. He/she must have experience in management and supervision, familiarity with application development and other emerging technologies, and a strong grasp of trends in humanities scholarship. He/she should also demonstrate a significant record of success in grant writing, community building, and an ability to collaborate with people from a variety of disciplines.

 

The Director of Digital Access will serve as a member of the Director’s senior leadership team and, in coordination with the Director, will be responsible for developing a strategy for the current and future library’s digital initiatives, which encompass all aspects of its operations.  He/she works closely with the Director and other members of the leadership team to determine how digital assets at the Folger should be deployed to expand access for both scholarly and popular audiences.

 

The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker, with excellent analytical, written, and oral communication and organizational proficiency. He/she will demonstrate a thorough understanding of the Folger’s unique role in the cultural and scholarly communities, and be responsive to the needs of the various components of the institution and its mission.

Senior Development Officer for Institutional Relations

35 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:45 am to 4:45 pm. Additional hours as needed for evening receptions and other donor events.

 

B.A. required.  Minimum three years’ experience in development with an emphasis on foundation and government grant proposal writing and preparation, preferably in nonprofit cultural institutions.  Candidate should have a passion for the humanities, arts, and education.  Needed: demonstrated record in conceiving and implementing strategies to successfully raise funds (including 4-, 5-, and 6-figure grant awards) from foundations and government agencies; superior writing and editing skills; excellent interpersonal communication and time management skills; and an ability to perform well both with independent initiative and as part of a closely woven development team.  Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is required; knowledge of Raiser’s Edge, Foundation Directory Online, and Grants.gov is highly desirable.

 

Working closely with the Director of Development and program staff Library-wide, the Senior Development Officer for Institutional Relations will secure funding from foundations and government agencies, solicit corporate sponsors, and lead prospect research for foundations, government funders, and corporations.  In addition to managing the library’s relationships with these institutions, the position will help conceive fundraising strategies, engage in long-range planning, and interpret highly technical and scholarly complex projects for prospective funders.  Other responsibilities include writing, submitting, and tracking grant proposals to government and foundation prospects; coordinating staff across departments to prepare proposal forms, narratives, budgets, attachments, reports, and surveys to meet deadlines; soliciting corporate sponsors; identifying, researching, and qualifying corporate, foundation, and government donor prospects; and cultivating and providing stewardship for institutional funders.

Facilities Intern

10 hours per week for the fall semester (8 to 10 weeks). 

 

B.A. in engineering, construction, or architecture preferred. Strong written and oral communication skills. Good organizational skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. Strong attention to detail. Ability to establish priorities and juggle numerous assignments at one time. An interest and background in engineering, construction, or facilities management. Familiarity with a Windows environment and the MS Office suite of products is required.

 

The Facilities Department is responsible for the daily conservation and upkeep of

the Folger Shakespeare Library. This includes tasks ranging from cleaning

practices to capital projects. Considering the Folger Shakespeare Library was built

in the 1930’s, one of the Facilities department’s difficulties is maintaining this

building while preserving the historic integrity.

 

The Facilities Intern will assist the staff with various organizational projects in the

areas of chilled water, steam, mechanical systems, and electrical systems. The

intern may be asked to perform any of the following tasks: Reviewing and organizing engineered drawings and other O&M documents, assisting with scanning and archiving engineered drawings and other O&M documents, reviewing and editing engineering related Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, researching vendor and contractor prospects as needed, providing administrative help as needed. Additional opportunities may be available to the intern based on his or her background, work experience, and areas of interest.

Human Resources Manager

Folger Shakespeare Library, a world-class center for scholarship, learning, culture, and the arts, seeks a seasoned Human Resources Manager to lead its three person human resources department  in providing human resources services for 100 fulltime and 50 part-time employees. Home to the world’s largest Shakespeare collection and a primary repository for research material on the early modern period in Europe (1500-1750), Folger Shakespeare Library is an internationally recognized research library offering advanced scholarly programs in the humanities; a national leader in how Shakespeare is taught in grades K-12; and an award-winning producer of cultural and arts programs—theater, music, poetry, exhibits, lectures, and family programs.

 

B.A degree required with emphasis on HR desired.  PHR or SPHR a plus. Experience in a non-profit, academic, or cultural institution, desirable. Demonstrated expertise in HR procedures, employment law and in administration.  Seven years’ progressively responsible human resources experience, including supervisory experience.  Proficiency in managing, administering, and implementing fair and lawful employment practices.  Ability to manage multiple priorities and complex issues with meticulous attention to detail.  Experience hiring foreign nationals.  Ability to work independently and as part of a team.  Demonstrated experience in monitoring the employment process and in working with divisional managers to ensure a legal and efficient HR process.  Knowledge of computer applications and HRIS skills essential. Must exercise mature, confidential, and discretionary judgment in counseling staff members.  Coordinates payroll functions with the human resources office at Amherst College with minimum responsibility for payroll itself.

IT Systems and Support Specialist

Position grant funded through June 2013. Normal hours Monday-Friday from 8:45 am to 4:45 pm, up to 40 hours per week. Requires physical agility, with the ability to squat, twist, and bend as needed. Ability to lift and carry weights up to 20 lbs. required.

 

Associates Degree or B.A. preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. One to two years experience with Cisco and HP hardware running Windows Servers 2003/2008, Active Directory, Exchange 2010, and Symantec security products. Experience supporting users running Office 2007 or higher, FilemakerPro, and Adobe products. The ideal candidate will have a strong working knowledge of network operations and system management, along with the ability to trouble-shoot a variety of desktop support issues for a medium-size organization. Strong organizational and communication skills are essential, along with a friendly, personable demeanor.


First line of contact for all users concerning daily technical issues; escalates system or advanced issues to other IT staff as required. Provide system management and    support, including regular security patches, system upgrades, and workstation builds. Functional support for users in a mixed environment (Windows XP/7, MS Office 2007, IE and Firefox, and Adobe). Hardware support for desktops, laptops, monitors, phones, printers, and mobile devices. Provides Tech/AV setups for meetings and other library functions as needed. Provide support via email and phone, or at user’s location as needed. Sets up and installs new servers, switches, and workstations as needed. Other duties as assigned by the Head of Information Systems.

Part-Time House Manager

Dependent upon schedule of events, requiring flexibility; during the season of programs, frequently Tuesday through Sunday, generally 4:00 p.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays; noon to 4 p.m. and 4 p.m. till 11 p.m. on weekends.

 

Associates degree required; B.A. preferred. Two years general theatre experience or equivalent combination of arts administration training and experience desirable. Experience with guest services and patron cultivation necessary. TAMS training a plus. MS Word, Excel, and Outlook computer skills required. Friendly, outgoing personality a plus. Good organizational skills. Must work easily in a fast-paced environment. Applicant must be able to work independently as well as be a team player.

 

Under the direction of the Audience Services Coordinator, oversees and manages the front of house for theatre and other Folger public events, including concession sales, volunteer usher instruction, and audience management.  Works to ensure a successful experience for Folger audiences, welcoming and cultivating patrons, assisting in any appropriate way to make visit rewarding. Has primary responsibility for house management public events at the Folger, including performances of Folger Theatre; Folger Consort; PEN/Faulkner and poetry events; and other events as designated.

Part-time Special Police Officer

Hours for day or night as required--subject to change. Must be highly mobile, with ability to be on feet for extended periods. High school diploma or equivalent. Special Police Officer (SPO) commission certification required. Good interpersonal and communication skills required. Knowledge of security and safety procedures. One to two years experience in security or safety, preferably in library or museum environment or police force. Experience with surveillance and security or alarm systems.

 

Enforces security regulations for building entry, including surveillance of staff and visitors in the galleries, theater and other public areas of Library. Monitors building security panel system and sequence of operation. Responds, as necessary, to internal security check-ins and patrols Library areas for security compliance. Logs staff in and out as needed for security and payroll purposes. Issues and collects keys and monitors departing staff and visitors. Inspects bags or other personal property of employees and visitors to ensure proper security of Library property. Monitors movement of vendors, contractors, and caterers for daytime and evening activity and events. Ensures vendors and visitors are properly signed in and out of building. Escorts vendors and contractors to restricted areas and alarms and disarms security areas as needed. Enforces parking regulations for staff and visitors. Assists Central Library Registrar with property management issues, such as deposits for keys and check-in/check-out of property guests. Answers and transfers incoming calls as needed. Responds to directions of officer-in-charge, regarding postings, emergencies, or special assistance. Performs other security duties as assigned.

Internship Opportunities

 

Many divisions of the Folger have opportunities for internships, both paid and unpaid, for undergraduate and graduate students to learn about the daily operations of an independent research library with a vigorous set of cultural and educational programs.

 

Internships are available with the following divisions: Central Library, Development, Education, Public Programs, and Research. Preference for Central Library internships is given to graduate students pursuing a master’s degree in Library Science or Museum Studies. For all other internships, preference is given to students pursuing academic and professional goals in the arts and/or humanities. While the majority of these internships are unpaid, this decision is left to each division’s discretion.

 

Central Library internship projects are available in the following areas: Acquisitions, Cataloging, Curatorial support, Digital initiatives, Exhibitions, and Reader Services. Applicants should specify their areas of interest so that applications can be forwarded to the appropriate members of staff. Please indicate whether you are interested in an unpaid internship or if you are applying for an internship / field study for course credit. Indicate a preferred start date in your application, and please submit at least 90 days in advance of that date. Note that while we accept applications on an ongoing basis, we meet on a quarterly basis to consider internships for the academic fall semester (ca. Sept. - Dec.); spring semester (ca. Jan. - May); or for full or part-time summer internships. Preference for Central Library internships is given to graduate students pursuing a master’s degree in Library Science or Museum Studies.

 

The Development Office is responsible for raising unrestricted and restricted gift income in support of organizational needs from individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies.

 

The Folger Education Division offers unpaid internships for students interested in Theatre Education, Education Administration, and Shakespeare. Days and hours are flexible. The Education Division is no longer accepting applications for fall 2012 internships. Applications for winter/spring 2013 will be accepted through January.

 

The Division of Public Programs produces events for the general public, including theatre productions, literary readings, concerts, and tours.

 

The Division of Research sponsors seminars, conferences, and workshops involving the Renaissance period for doctoral and postdoctoral level scholars, and produces Shakespeare QuarterlyShakespeare Quarterly is not accepting applications for internships at this time.

 

Potential interns, screened on an individual basis, should send a résumé, cover letter indicating which Division they are interested in, and a letter from their institution's internship office stating the requirements for academic credit (if it is to be requested).
