2012 WISE Summit: "Collaborating for Change"
The World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) convened for its fourth annual Summit November 13 to 15, 2012 in Doha, Qatar.
The 2012 Summit's theme is “Collaborating for Change”.
This year more than 1,000 prominent education, corporate, political and social leaders from over 100 countries gathered for the Summit at the Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha to explore how collaboration in many forms and at many levels can become the driving force of efforts to inspire innovation in education and to design long-term strategies for its renewal. WISE is an ideal platform for multi-sectoral collaboration in building the future of education. The Summit offers a unique opportunity to education experts, academicians, and policy makers from diverse backgrounds.
High-Level Interactive Sessions
The three-day Summit offers a convivial environment for interactive discussions with speakers, experts and members from the WISE Community. Attendees are given an opportunity to collaborate, share best practices and challenge their thinking during interactive Plenary Sessions and Debates. Focus Sessions highlight innovative Best Practices or projects, along with Workshops to facilitate collaboration on specific issues. Guests connected with members of the WISE Community, including the holders of the 2012 WISE Awards winning projects and this year’s Learners’ Voice student delegates. Also, the WISE Prize for Education, now in its second year, will be awarded during the Summit to an individual or a team in recognition of an outstanding contribution to education. Guests witnessed the address by the newly recognized 2012 WISE Prize Laureate Dr. Madhav Chavan at this prestigious event.
More than 70 sessions and all the related activities at the Summit offered a unique opportunity for all the participants to find out more about the most cutting-edge practices in education, network with high-level people from all sectors and from all countries, and to actively participate in building the future of education.
In a world where boundaries between countries, cultures and sectors are increasingly permeable, ideas move fast and are capable of inspiring change anywhere and at any time. Our thinking about education and the challenges it faces can benefit from this rapid spread of views and experiences.

November 13
On Day 1, after an Opening Plenary session set the context for the three days of discussions, the Summit considered what new kinds of education are needed to address the many complex and interrelated challenges facing today’s world (Debates 1.1 to 1.6). This inclusive approach may help draw the outlines of a collaborative new deal for education, which is the focus of Thematic Plenary Session 1, “Educating for Our Times”.
November 14
Building on the first day's theme, attendees were invited on Day 2 to reflect upon overcoming resistance to change (Thematic Plenary 2: “Breaking Barriers to Innovation”) by questioning conventional models and fostering novel approaches. Reformers from around the world will describe some creative solutions and successful practices, notably in terms of access, financing and teaching (Debates 2.1 to 2.6).
November 15
On Day 3, WISE 2012 examined forms of collaboration, which might facilitate practical and effective progress in designing the future of education. This may spring from interactions among people from different societies, sectors and cultural backgrounds (Thematic Plenary 3 – “Building a Learning World”). This may also happen by shaping effective learning ecosystems, improving strategies to share success and enhancing institutional processes (Debates 3.1 to 3.3).
Innovation and collaboration in transforming education are at the heart of the WISE initiative, and the Closing Plenary laid the foundations of a new, far-sighted vision.
More than 1,000 education, corporate, political and social leaders, thinkers and practitioners, from over 100 countries, will explore how collaboration can become the driving force of innovation in education and of designing long-term strategies for its renewal.
Speakers from a wide variety of backgrounds will chair and moderate the sessions at WISE 2012 exploring current educational challenges and highlighting innovative solutions.
