Taken on the opening day of Belmont's Spring "Metropolitan Meet". Here is an article about it, from the Daily Racing Form's Archives:

Thanks so much spotboslow for linking to this great resource. Sure enough it is opening day. We'll add this information to the record the next time we update.

From the look of him and the company he's keeping, "A.A. Gallatin" is probably Albert Eugene Gallatin (1881-1952), who inherited the vast fortune developed by his great-grandfather Albert Gallatin (early American Secretary of the Treasury and friend of the first John Jacob Astor), and was one of the most eligible socialite bachelors in New York of his era (excepting the pictured Mrs. J.J. Astor's late husband, who died on the Titanic in 1912). He was known as an author of books about art, founder of the first U.S. modern art museum, a top art collector, and an artist himself.

An extensive account of the day in the New York Sun mentions Gallatin and Astor:
"The capacity of the Turf and Field Club was tested at the luncheon hour, there being 250 persons, who were seated at tables in the clubhouse, on the veranda and terrace and also on the lawn under the trees.. The largest luncheon was given by Albert Eugene Gallatin, president of tho Motor Car Touring Society. Among his guests were the officers and members of that society with some of their friends. Mr. Gallatin's guests included Mrs. John Jacob Astor,...[etc.]"

Thanks artolog. I was able to find a few other portraits of Albert Eugene Gallatin, and it does appear to be the same man. Bain has another photo of Gallatin, mis-labled as "A. G. Gallatin" which also appears to be the same man. You can see it in our online catalog at www.loc.gov/pictures/item/ggb2005019220. I'll update the records of both photos.

You're welcome, Jon. That other photo you reference is probably from a series of Bain shots taken at the Tuxedo (NY) Horse Show, held June 4-5, 1915.
