In the early 1900s the era of Haute Couture began to unfold. Traditionally, women wore full skirts with corsets but as fashion became more prominent, skirts began to slim and even show a little ankle. Supposedly, horse races were the premier time to show off the latest designer fashions.

Relatives of mine, Mrs. M. Schiff (on the right) is Mrs. Mortimer Leo Schiff, or to use her maiden name, Adele Gertrude Neustadt, mother of Dorothy and John M. Schiff. Not sure where the location is, but probably one of the towns near the Jersey Shore. As for Mrs. Seligman, I don't know, could be one of a dozen women who married one of the grandson's of David I. Seligman during that time period.

    Wystan:

Thanks for connecting together these various images at a horse show! Can you point to where they have been identified as being at Long Branch, New Jersey? I haven't been able to track down such a reference within this collection, and would love to be able to confirm it.

The only reason I said they were at the races is that the women on the right looks like she is holding a racing program.

To anyone who is interested..I have Gertrudes birth certificate and documents related to Sigmund Neustadt. I found them in my fathers estate. I do not believe I am related to the Mrs Seligman. Please contact me.

The "Monmouth Horse Show" would make sense for this photo, as most of my relatives spent summers at Long Branch, NJ in those days. Not sure of the dates of the "Monmouth Horse Show," but from the way they are dressed, I would guess April or May or even early Autumn, say mid-September or October, I'll try to do more research on it and post what I find.

The whipped cream of New York society turned out in October, 1912, for the eleventh annual horse show at the Piping Rock Country Club, in Locust Valley, on the north shore of Long Island. A new clubhouse and stepped observation boxes had just been opened for their pleasure:
