Washington, DC – U.S. Rep. Dave Camp (R-MI) has been tapped by House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) as a member of the House GOP American Energy Solutions Group, designated to craft Republican solutions to lower energy prices for American families and small businesses.
“I have always been a strong advocate for a more sustainable energy policy, increasing our utilization of domestic energy sources and reducing our dependence on costly foreign oil,” Camp said. “Keeping energy prices low is critical to helping our economy grow. That is why I authored the law to expand tax credits to produce wind and solar energy and incentives for consumers to purchase alternative fuel vehicles. Creating new sources of energy will also create new jobs in states like Michigan, where we are fast becoming a leader in solar energy.”
“High energy costs continue to hit the pocketbooks of American families and small businesses,” said Leader Boehner. “As gasoline prices skyrocketed to record levels last summer, Republicans consistently advocated an all-of-the-above strategy to create up to one million new jobs in the United States by increasing American energy production, encouraging greater efficiency and conservation, and promoting the use of alternative fuels.”
Camp has worked to lower energy prices with initiatives like the Energy Policy Act and a hybrid vehicle tax credit.
Camp was one of three Members of the House responsible for drafting the final version of the Energy Policy Act (EPA) of 2005, which provided $10.9 billion in renewable energy tax incentives aimed at clean energy production using wind and landfill gas, $2.6 billion in incentives targeted toward cleaner vehicles and fuels, and $3.5 billion in tax breaks to promote energy conservation and energy efficiency.
The EPA also created a solar investment tax credit for homes and businesses, which has since been extended through 2017. The EPA also included Camp’s bill creating a hybrid vehicle tax credit, which provides consumers a tax credit of up to $4,000 towards the purchase of a hybrid vehicle.
Last Congress, Camp introduced legislation creating a tax credit for electric plug-in vehicles. This legislation was enacted as part of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act in October 2008.
