Mentally ill advocates rally for group home money

RALEIGH -- Mental health advocates are asking legislators and the governor to help mentally ill people in group homes who may end up with nowhere to live because of an issue involving Medicaid payments.

Those advocates held a rally Wednesday in front of the Legislature to call for action. They say about 1,400 people with mental disabilities could be on the street Jan. 1 because lawmakers didn't include group homes in legislation that protected residents of adult care homes.  They say it would cost about $7 million to add group home residents.

Rep. Nelson Dollar says the governor could find the money in the budget or the group home residents could file appeals. That process would keep the money coming until the Legislature goes back into session Jan. 30
