A three block line weaved through a quaint neighborhood in South End of Boston, each person waiting to cast their vote at the polling place inside the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology. This is an austere, historic and heavily liberal section of Boston (generously assuming there are some non-liberal parts of Boston). Signs for Elizabeth Warren and buttons proudly proclaiming “Students for Obama” were in abundance.

This reporter called on some of those in line, asking some simple questions concerning why they showed up today to perform their civic duty. So what were the issues that animated them in the campaign? Their answers were largely couched in generalities, warm pockets of feel-good social “rights” issues.

“Women’s rights”, “gay marriage”, “planned parenthood”, “social welfare” rang out time and time again. The economic issues Mitt Romney hammered on were nowhere to be found — these voters were participating in an alternate election, one based on the social issues hand-crafted by team Obama. Without any specifics, but in full faith, these young voters stood, ready to cast their sacred ballots for the incumbent.

To any conservative wondering where they went astray this cycle, observe the religious-like conviction of the voters here when rattling off their liberal talking points. However, beyond the rhetoric, how much do these eager voters know about our American government? Just a few questions, then: How many Senators are there? How many Congressmen? Supreme Court Justices? Who is Nancy Pelosi? Harry Reid? Can you name an amendment to the Constitution?

Most young people (conservative or not) would not know the HOR has 435 people. All my (non political science major) friends — conservative or liberal — would have no idea. Most youth don’t care that much.
A good portion of my family ( sisters + brother-in-laws, ect) are conservative. None of them would know the answer to most of these questions. Like this people, the recite their basic beliefs. They state they like low taxes, less regulation and strong national defense.

I saw someone say that they should need to be 30 to vote, I’ll take it a couple of steps even further. One requirement for that class was being able to recognize the major figures in politics by sight, state their party and function within the government. Do not think all of us are ignorant of what is going on. Almost every friend of mine watched the debates and discussed the different platforms. Just as statistics dictate, the majority of us fell on the side of Obama. A few did favor Romney and vote as such. Overarching generalizations just make people angry.

I see from the answers in the interview that we are quite close to losing our foundation. As a society we need to stand for something or certainly many of us will fall for anything that is thrown or way.It certainly is frightening to see in my lifetime, mid 20th century to early 21st century, the inability from the so called educated people, as to see what makes this country so special. I’m not saying they shouldn’t know more. They should. And they should be smart enough to differentiate a Pinko from a Genuine American Man Leader (which they cannot, it seems). But let’s not pretend like these youngins are dumber than the average bear. They’re not.
I like watching the videos with the youngsters. Even when I think they’re wronger than chocolate sauce on rare prime rib, they bring me a jolt of joy. Such energy. And that attitude that they can take on the world!
Well, they’ll learn better eventually. Let ‘em enjoy it in the meantime. Youth is fleeting and we all end up broken down, beaten and a little bit pathetic eventually.
But let’s do something to get their heads screwed on straighter. Some sort of re-education program that promotes the kind of Real American Values that will prevent us from ending up with light-in-the-proverbial-loafers leadership and that will put Real Successful Captains of Industry in a position to run the economy!

The professor said several times that ALL the wealth in this country has been stolen, and then instructed the class to write essays on how to “remake” the power structure to correct this
